Chucksters Customs Switch

Just ordered this relocate/replacement handlebar ignition switch from Chucksters Custom last night. Can't wait to try it out. Any one had/has one and what you think about it would be great. Will post pictures when I get it and have it installed.

Just be careful that you don't pull the wires loose from the switch by not leaving enough slack.

Please don't ask me how I know about that.

And make doubly sure that the wires are insulated at the switch to bracket.

The clearance is extremely tight there.

And for F@*KS sake make sure you don't cut the resistor off by shortening the wires.

That little oopsie cost me a week once.

Other than that mine has been great for as long as I've had it, and like everything Joe sells the quality is perfect.

I bet you have a funny little installation story to tell Mr. Tequila

And how do you lock the ignition? Where does the key go? I look forward to the pics.

YES!! I just installed one last month, as part of my winter upgrades. Works and looks GREAT..

The lock is under a flip top on the knob. You have to remove the key to close/latch the cover back down.

KR, It will work mounted a 180 degree to way you have it, right?

MAS T, advice well given and taken. Was hoping for plenty of slack to work with. My job at work is with copper wiring and fiber optics so I'm use to dealing with and leaving slack.

Is the switch water tight for rain and washing the bike?

Chuck A... Yes, I just chose to mount it pointing up...

The switch assembly is from a Harley. So, I'm thinking it will be reasonably waterproof.. There is plenty of wire previded. I made my connection near the origiinal connector, left side of the top frame tube, under the tank. You could conceivably keep the stock connector and make the splices between the connector and the OEM ignition switch. Which would give you even more wire to work with. Sounds like from your comment about your job, you already know the benifets of solder and shrink tubing, being your friend.

Posts some picture's when you get it installed...

It comes with plenty of wire.

It's how I routed it that caused a problem.

I unknowingly had it tied off where at full lock to the right it was tight.

I was turning around on an unpaved lot and the wheel went hard right and pulled the wires hard enough that the positive connection made contact and popped the fuse before breaking the solder joint and coming loose.

I was an hour from home, and the first thought was what the F@*K now.

After calming down and being able to think again, I pulled the other wire and twisted them together, and nothing happened.

Then after realizing the fuse issue, everything worked to make it home.

Soldered it back together wrapped black tape around the switch before putting it back in the housing and all was great.

Then when I painted the bike, I decided there was some extra length to the wires under the left side of the tank and shortened them.

A few days later everything worked except the fuel pump didn't prime and the bike wouldn't fire.

It took a week, and taking a lot of things apart and reassembling over and over before I figured out I had thrown out that resistor.

A package of resistors and 2 minutes with a soldering iron and all was and is well.

My problems were all self inflicted.

The switch and housing are great pieces.

You will love the upgrade.

Just don't leave without your keys, but that's another story.

I gather it is not a pull and play wiring harness. If it needs soldering that will be ok too. I have double wall shrink with steel rod for no flexing. 2 1/2 inches in length. We do have standard shrink of all sizes at the shop(work). I'll put shrink over the shrink and may even go see a shrink before I'm done. Now just the wait time for it to be made and shipped. Arms folded, foot tapping, patiently waiting.

You mean everybody is not going to get to watch you do that Yoga exercise ever 1500 owner does to turn off their ignition. Relocating mine back between the cylinders after I did the one side aircleaner deal was one of the best things I've done to mine. Being the tightwad I am ,I used flatstock aluminum and made a mounting bracket for my stock keyswitch. That's the best feature on the1600 and 1700 bikes. A locking keyswitch that is in plain sight. Imagine that,I don't know what moron decides these things like putting a keyswitch on the front frame tube underneath that big old gas tank. I do believe he's the same man that decided no street bike ever ,needed a kick starter.
