Fairing pocket keys

I'm sure I'm not the only one who wishes that you didn't have to use the key to get into the pockets in the fairing so I finally did something about it.

The bike is out of commission right now while the ECU is getting flashed so what better to do than update it a bit.

I make "key knobs" that will reside in the keyhole while riding and I can pull them out when I stop. I've got about $12 into this project and maybe 30 minutes of time. I'm pretty happy with the results.

Here they are...

I've always wanted to eliminate the key for the ignition, it's such a pain in the butt. I like your idea but I was wondering how you did it. Did you have to cut off the head of the key and somehow put it into the knob?

I simply cut the head of the key off and made a "slit" in the knob and pushed the key in and glued it in place.

Did something similar to my old Nomad key. Will be doing something soon for the Vaquero. Good job.

But looks like that you could type it !

You just have to look at the pics in the pdf. You have to dremel some parts out, so you could open the pockets and REMOVE the key.
page 1, left before, right after.

Also some magnets added, that the pockets stay closed while riding.
Magnet are from a shop here which is comparable to home depot in the USA.
They are magnets for cabinet doors. 2 of them in the "door" and 2 into the pocket.

Just look at the pics.

Sven

That is very clever and convenient and if you want, you could take those out and place them in the pouch in the left saddle bag if you want to place your camera or wallet in the pockets like I do when I am on the road for pocket lock up....works both ways....nice.

Update...

I finally got to take the bike out for a ride and noticed, due to the weight of the knob, the vibrations of the Vaquero will cause the lock mechanism to turn and "unlock" the door, leaving the pocket door free to fly wide open :(

I'm looking into fixes or alternative solutions, stay tuned.

Update:

I've put over 1000 miles on her since I added the keys. With the suggestion of someone on the other forum I used a small body panel fastener trimmed to height inside the pocket and it holds securely now. Just did a 300 mile trip, each way, and not a single vibration caused it to open.

Can you post a close up pic of the fastener? Thanks.
