Fargo, N.D., Seeks Flood Protection

If anyone is planning to ride via Fargo, ND, the forecasts don't sound very good.

Fargo is notorious for flooding over the decades. It was another wondrous engineering disaster-idea of the Army Corp. of Engineers. Not sure when they'll learn you cannot fight mother nature...

You would think people wouldn't build house there any more... but apparently they didn't get the message. That says something for them...

I have a friend who moved there to work for John Deere. He said it is nuts up there with the flooding. He bought his house out and away from the nonsense.

Well, that seems like an annual occurence for Fargo. If you've ever been there you would understand why. It's built in one of the widest flatest valleys I have ever seen.

I'm not familiar with that area, just saw the news item in New York Times and thought I should post it for those who might be riding in that part of the country.

Been to Fargo a few times in my life. Don't see that there would be a reason to return... ever... even if I had to go past it.

Before Indian Gaming came to Minnesota, Fargo was the place to go for gambling without having to go to Las Vegas. Not much there to attract tourists IMHO.

Hi Greg, we spent the long weekend in the Ocean Shores area in WA. It's a small community of 5000 people but they host 4 million visitors annually.

I'm not sure of their level of readiness for tsunami but the town looked ready to handle large flooding. We really liked this town and Westport, WA, too.

On another note, it's a great place to take a ride to and then the loop around the Olympic NP is a very nice ride as well.

Cheers,

E.

Crescent City CA, where we had the NWR/SW joint rally a couple of years ago was hit by a tsunami caused by the Japanese earthquake and has a history of tsunami-related incidents over the years. They had the signs all over the place that read "Tsunami Zone if alarm sounds, head to higher ground." I was in a bar having lunch and there was a sign on the wall that looked just like the official ones, but it said "Tsunami Zone - if alarm sounds kiss your ass goodbye!"

Look at finally what happened to New Orleans... that a city that should have never been built there... or at least people should have never continued to build-out there.

If you haven't seen the project the U.S. Fed "gov" is doing down there now... you need to look it up. The amount of money we are spending down there to protect property that should have never existed is unbelievable.

Certainly they are over-engineering the project given the political backlash BS that occurred after Katrina... however one day even that will fail... mostly because it will last without much maintenance for several decades... but one day the mother of all storms will roll-in and take it out... and we'll be back to square-one.

Hey... I am not against anyone wanting to live where they want... but I AM against others (taxpayers) having to pay for their stupidity. Let people fend for themselves in paying for their choices... and I'll be happier.
