HD Tourpak

Any chance someone out there has the HD paper template to layout the cuts needed in the tourpak to install the brake/tail light kit? The tourpak I acquired on Ebay was on a cop bike so has multiple holes from the lights they had on it. The light kit will hide a lot of them but requires some fairly precise cuts into the tourpak. I'd hate to miss cut it for lack of a template. HD says it is not available and a discontinued item. Go figure.

If you buy a new tail light from HD, it comes with the template, see the attachment by clicking HERE

I've seen that particular website and pdf file, however, as detailed as it is the template is still required. Although I got a deal on Ebay with the trunk and side lights included, I will have to wing it on the cuts unless a template falls from the sky. Time is on my side right now. I do not want to send the trunk out for paint until I order a reckless fairing and dry fit that also. Might as well get them both painted at the same time. Thanks for the tip though.

Find someone who has a Tour Pak with the lights in it, that you can get a few measurements from, and copy it.

I had considered doing it to my trunk in the past, but the light kit was so damm expensive I held off. Perhaps one day I'll get lucky and find a trunk off an Ultra at a good price.

I had to drill a hole in the lid of my trunk to mount a HD tourpak lock. It didn't come with a template, because the new HD Tourpaks have a mark molded into the lid that locates the hole properly. Mine is an HD clone, not the genuine article. I measured about 17 times and drilled once.

It is a problem even if you do find the same King Tourpak with the light kit on. I have an Ultra King TourPak and it is hard to see what holes are cut where because the whole unit is sealed on the inside of the box and you also have the cuts needed for the antennas if that was part of the police special layout you have.

What a friend of mine did was wrap the top third or more of the box and covered it with seat vinyl to match the seats. The top and bottom edges were lined with braiding and the whole thing was attached with velcro. The cover dropped down at the front of the box to cover the bolt holes from the speaker pods. He also added an HD vinyl lid cover to hide some of the holes in the lid. I have one of those that I studded. I think I paid $58 for mine from an HD dealer.

He had the seat vinyl for the box done by an upholsterer for a lot less than the price of the rear light kit. He added LED light strips to each side of the box on the bottom rear. The result looked very good and not so HD looking.

Heck, I would just put the same lights the cops had on it. You would get a lot of attention that way. Some good and of course some bad.

If anyone can give up the measurement from the top edge of the trunk lip to the top edge of the cutout of the light I would appreciate it. I do recognize that a carpet kit may make that request impossible. The vinyl idea that Hammer suggested sounds good also but a two tone paint scheme would look really nice too. Meanwhile I am doing bodywork on smaller holes. My other project is to see if I can modify the existing rack to support the trunk. That may be wishful thinking though. Fortunately, none of my projects keep the bike off the road. Snowed yesterday, however was in the low seventies a few days earlier. Another two months and it will be in the 100's. Yea!

You could always fill the holes and start over fresh, especially if you're going to have the tourpak painted.

A lot of the liners lift out of the tour paks, so it should be easy to get your measurements. Im not sure if Id use the existing rack to mount the trunk to, they are rather large and can hold quite a bit. Id go with a Wompus rack, they are very solid and you would not have any problems.

I am with Ring on the rack. I would not use the existing rails to try to support the trunk and
Wompus makes an excellent product.

You can also make your own trunk rack if you have the time and aptitude. I have sent out quite a few how to's for the rack I used for my HD King TourPak. PM me an e-mail addy and I will send pics and instructions and then you can decide which way you want to go.
