'07 1600 Nomad Scheduled Maintenance

2 thumbs when it comes to wrenching so I took the Nomad to the dealer for an oil change. Figure for $50 and a 20 point safety check it was worth it. They adjusted the throttle cable and shifter for me. She an '07 with only 12,000 miles on her and I have tires on order since mine (original) are balding in the rear and have a little dry rot on the front. Going with the OEM Bridgestones.

Question is they suggested changing all the fluids now. Figure it's about a $250 job and wondering if it's necessary at this time. She's a great runner with no issues. Thanks guys ;)

I have an 07 with 54,000 miles and I don't think the dealer changed mine that early, I know the first time it was scheduled to be changed they said it looked
OK so did not change it.
I'm not sure if either have ever been changed to tell you the truth It still runs like a champ.
How often do we change the fluids in our cars and truck other than oil ??? Not very often.
OK Mac, go ahead and chastise me. I can take it.

Kawa shop manual suggests every 2 yrs or 15000 miles which ever comes first for clutch and brake fluid and 3yrs or 24000 miles for coolant. However I usually change out these fluids every 5 years on my 4 wheel vehicles and probably will do the same on the Nad.

What would "all the fluids" consist of?

Oil in the crankcase, rear drive oil, Dot 4 brake fluid in the clutch and brake resorvoirs, engine coolant and the fork oil. I think that about covers all lubricants or coolants.

I would skip fork oil at 12,000 miles, but the rest is worthy.

I would get this done with 54,000 miles though TC

Getting back to that 12,000 miles, if the swing arm was never serviced it is long over due.

Dry splines on that drive shaft are not good. Dry splines of the rear wheel hub are not good either.

The long bolt has in general no dammned grease in thar from the factory in the first bloomin place.

And then there is that itchy little problem of the head bearings also not having any dammned grease either.

Rear the thread on the dammned long bolt. On that thread that dammed bolt had to be sawed out in 2 bloomin places!

I bet that was no less than 1 hour per cut. Not a lot of fun.

Joe, Each time you have your rear tire replaced have you rear differential grease changed, and your swingarm serviced. That should be about every 12,000 miles. They will have to bleed the rear brake at that time also. That takes care of half you problem. It sound like you are due for a rear tire so there you are.

Every other time you replace a front tire (about every 36,000 miles) have them change your fork oil and grease/adjust the steering head bearing and that takes care of half of what is remaining.

You can do the "Turkey Baister Cheat" yourself once a year on the two master cylcinder resivoires on your handle bars. That will cost $10 Call me and I will explain. Then when ever you replace pads just have them bleed the brakes they change.

You'll be left with when do I change my rad fluid? Once every 4 years where we live so on your 07 that would next year. And when do I change my clutch fluid? Every time you change the radiator fluid.

tyrosco , Rear differential grease changed???? You mean gear oil? I know the book says 24,000, but that blasted book is WRONG. Not only does it state too much oil, the timing for 6.2 losey ounces is way wrong.

I change mine every oil change and if i don't I change it the next time. Not changing it is just asking for a big problem.

24,000 might be fine for a set up that holds almost 2 qts, but 6 ounces??????

Every single time I changed ine I find gleeming metal in a fine sheen mixed with the oil. That oil didnt have any metalic sheen when it went in. It sure does coming out and on the 06 I haven't been very far so that oil has been changed at 3,000 miles like clock work.

The 15 I had went to cal, and so that oil was changed late in Nebraska once, late again in Cal, late again in Alabama, but was never late before that or after, untill I lost controll anyway after it was stolen.

I find that somewhat upsetting the oils and all other services were done for a theif.

I just changed my Brakes and Clutch fluid using a Mighty-Vac, made it real easy. The fluids were quite dark, compared to the new stuff going in. It's an '08 with about 18,000 km. I also change the rear diff. fluid every oil change @ 4,000 km. and lube the kickstand.
Doing the easy stuff can save a ton of money and down time at the dealers shop, gives you a chance to really look your bike over .... I found my rear shifter was loose recently, couldn't feel it was loose because it's splined, but I could see it was loose because it had moved toward the floor board, slid it over and tightend it up.

Haven't done my coolant yet, so I don't know if it's a p.i.t.a. but I'll find out at the end of next seasons riding.
