Cheaper paint????

Anyone know of a paint that is a close match to the phantom silver or the dark green that won't cost as much as the bike. I have some parts I would like to paint but I am not really interested in matching exactly the paint scheme of the bike but would like to get close to the color. I bought a trunk and if it works out I am thinking of just painting it a solid green or silver. I wonder if I took one of my saddlebags into the local body shop if they could match it without having to buy special paint from colorite? Anyone have any luck with this?

If you did not need an exact match, I would look at the Duplicolor spray cans that you can find at autozone, etc.
You can get primer and clear in a spray can as well.

Hope this helps, Bill

I guess the hard part is going to be the metalic part. If I want to match that I bet I will have to go with colorite.

Go to a automotive paint store with one of our side covers. They should be able to match. If it is the silver, have them look at the bike to match the color. Much chaper than colorite...

A local PPG paint supply house matched my 03's red by bringing a camera type device out to the bike and "reading" the paint with it. Then they custom mixed it. A touch up bottle was $4.50

I carried one of my saddlebags to my local PPG paint shop, and they colored matched the fantom silver and ocean blue EXACTLY. It cost me $70 each for a quart of each color. Each quart , after you add the hardner, makes 3 quarts. you mix it 2 parts hardner to one part color. For about $200 I got primer and thinner, paint and hardner, and clearcoat.

VulcanE,
How much do you think I will need to paint a trunk if I go one color? WIll a pint do it or would I need a quart?

OP, a Quart, with the hardener, makes 3 quarts. That's enough to totally paint 3-4 motorcycles, so I would say that a pint would be plenty. At my auto paint shop, a pint was the least you could get, but it cost 2/3 of what a quart would've cost.

OP,
I had my 06 Nomad paint matched perfectly by Jerry's Auto Body in Lennox, SD. They took some "shots" with the color scanner and the paint company matched it perfectly.
The only thing they could not match was the pinstripping tape for color and with so they simply hand painted the pinstripping.
I will have them paint my Venture trunk if I decide to mount it this spring.

Kioti,
What did you have them paint, the tank? I am putting a venture trunk on and am thinking just solid green ould look pretty good. Not sure if I want to go two-tone. What did they charge you?

OP,
I had them paint my outer fairing, two tone paint scheme.
Green and Silver. With the hand painted pin stripping it was just under 3 bills. They were REALLY busy when I wanted it painted but the painter is a bike guy and he squeezed it in.
When I have my trunk painted I think I will also go with the single color since everything looking from the rear of the bike is green.
I also might have it painted by my brother if he isn't too busy in his body shop.
My trunk needs some cracks fixed and I plan on doing that this winter if I keep it. Since those old Venture trunks are ABS it should be a pretty easy fix.
I am thinking about switching my bike to a solo rig since the wife bought a trike.

I have a Venture trunk as well ( with a few cracks ). The guy I bought it from used fiberglass sheets and resin to reinforce the bottom inside. Not sure if that is the way to go with ABS or not. I am hoping to get it done before Custer. Perhaps they would give us a better deal if we took them in at the same time. What method were you going to use to repair the cracks?
And do you know of a way to replace the lock? Mine didn't come with a key and any key will open it right now.

Not sure on the lock, you may be able to take it to a good local locksmith and have it re-keyed.
I have been searching the web for methods of repair. There is a kit made just for ABS and I am going to see if my brother can get me something that he uses on ABS parts in the body shop.
My trunk came with the top rack and the luggage rack that the trunk sets on, I'm not sure I will use it though.
I will check with Wompus and see if he has a lead on a replacement lock, he has used several of the Venture trunks on his 99 Nomad Fronkenstein.
