Ape Hangers

I apologize if this has been asked before in another thread.
I am going to be unable to ride for the summer because of surgery so I am thinking about doing some apes on the Nomad. How difficult is it to replace the throttle/clutch/brake lines? Are there any extensions I could use to just add on to the existing lines??
Thanks in advance for the info.

I believe it was Pablo that has apes on his nomad. And they look GREAT. If I had the patience for getting longer hoses and extending wires I would give it a go.

I agree!
They look meatier and a more comfortable wrist position... for me anyway.
Might just be a winter project this year so let us know how it goes if you choose to do it.

I don't believe you can get extensions. But you can get cables that and brake lines that are longer.

I have 1 1/4"x18" apes. This is the most comfortable riding position I've experienced; no pain or cramping in my bad shoulder. I had to get +6" lines and cables and extend the wiring by the same amount. I did it all myself and the only hard part was getting the throttle cable hooked up to the throttle body. I was starting to get pretty frustrated before I finally got it. Extending the wiring wasn't hard, but very tedious. I think there are 14 wires on the left hand side that have to be extended. I cut each one and soldered in a 6" extension. I would highly suggest getting the 1 1/4" diameter bars. The 1" bars I had before bent into the windshield, when the deer ran into me. The 1 1/4" bars seem much more solid.

Just not for me. It just doesn't look comfortable. If that is what you want, go for it and good luck.

Be sure to check state law, many states have laws about how high above the seat the bars can be.

The hydralic line just get made up, so measure out how long you will need and get theese made in in stainless wrap.

The wiring is just added too, and if you cut and add in the middle, doing a neat soldering job, prehaps stagger cutting, so no one place ends in a gob, with heat shrink , the wire you add can be all the same colors.

I am not sure where to get throttle cables the right length. Maybe Pablo will tell us all.

I got the ape hangers at meancycles.com - DCS-18APE
I got the SS brake & clutch lines at hellrisercustoms.com
I think I got the throttle cables at phatperformanceparts.com

Now that I think about it, I think the trottle cables were put on backorder at phatperformance parts and I ended up getting them at meancycles.com.

So Pablo you have 18" risers and had to add 6" to every thing so does that mean you can use 12" risers and use the stock lines?

I had 13" apes at first and did not have to add any extensions. I did have to reroute the front brake line. I then added 2" risers and had to extend the brake & clutch lines, but not the throttle cables and wiring. I then went to 16" apes with 2" risers and had to extend the throttle cables and wiring. After my deer incident, where I bent up the 16" apes, I went with the 18" apes without risers. This is much more solid feeling, especially with the 1 1/4" diameter bars.

Another observation: On Harleys and other bikes, 13" apes without extended risers put your hand position about the same place as 18" apes on the Nomad. I don't know why the Nomad's handlebar position is so low. I'm 6' and my hands with 18" apes are still slightly below shoulder height. See sig pic.

Pablo,
You have beena huge help with this. i am having shoulder surgery soon and everyone that has apes tells me that they are very comfortable and cause no pain in the neck and shoulders. So this is what I'm going for.
Just to clarify, did you just soder the extenstions onto the stock cables / wires or did you replace everything the full length?
My skill level is just a tad below rookie so Im am hesitant about that part.

I soldered 6" pieces of wire into every wire one at a time. I did not stagger the joints very well and have a knot where a lot of the solder joints are. If I was to do it again, I would do a better job of staggering the joints. My bars have demples to run internal wiring, but I haven't had the initiative to try this.
