I was scared

Cindy and I took our last ride of the season yesterday before putting the bikes away for the winter.
I had a trip in the GPS and was following the route. Somehow I missed a turn and was on a road not familiar.
I was looking at the GPS and checking my location while going 55 mph.
All of a sudden I hear on the intercom,"THAT'S A STOP SIGN"
Well I look up and sure as hell I am going to fast to stop. Here is an SUV pulling into the road from my right. I hit the brakes hard and start to slow as best I can. The rear tire locks for an instant and the back end starts to slide left just a little. I let off a little and it comes back into line. I swerve right and just miss the back of the SUV. If he had of seen me coming and stopped I would have hit him for sure. Luckily he kept moving through the intersection.
Sooooooo, barring any unforeseen health issues, I live to ride another season.
Pay attention out there and ride safe guys. Stay focused.

ABS would have come in handy in that situation. Good thing you were able to stop safely.

Yes, distractions are a bitch. Do you have voice prompts on your GPS? I listen to mine instead of looking at it.

A big thank you to Cindy for saving your butt by alerting you about the stop sign.

It just takes a split second to get into trouble.
Glad you're OK.

Glad you ok TC but just how hard were you on the FRONT brake??? thats your stopping power. You know gps is a great system, I use it but only audio! way too much going on to have a look.I have often thought of the exact story that you lived through but how many (bikes and cars) didn't? my 2 cents , glad you live to ride again, take care

Thanks guys.
caper, I was on the front brake pretty damn hard. The front forks were compressed and I think that took some of the weight off the rear and the rear locked up for a few seconds. The tire started to go sideways to the left and when I let off it straightened up. Then I let off the front brake to swerve around the SUV.
I don't have the GPS in voice mode. I just look at it now and then
May have to change that.

CJ, I kinda like having control of my brakes myself. I have ABS on my ruck and hate it in the winter.

twowheeladdict, yes if it weren't for Cindy I don't like to think of where I would be right now.

Glad to see that you made out ok with this. Definately tells everyone to pay attention.

By the way, are you going to have the same issues as BD and post about your bowel movements????

You wouldn't be riding your bike in winter like it was a "ruck" now, would you?
