Backfiring 1600 Nomad

I just purchased a 2008 Vulcan Nomad that is black in color. Looking forward to years of enjoyable rides on this one. I moved up from a 2005 Vulcan 800 Classic. My new ride only has 6,000 miles on it and came with Vance & Hines pipes and a DynoJet Power Commander. When I drove it home it seemed to backfire when I was downshifting at speeds above 55 MPH. My wife was following me and said she saw fire!!! Is this something I should be concerned about?

Check that the exhaust flanges are not loose. Sometimes the acorn nuts appear to be tight but they have bottomed out. Add a washer under the nut if that is the case.

Check the rear exhaust pipe for a crack at the first bend, or the gaskets where the pipe goes into the head.

Like others have said, air is getting mixed in with the hot exhaust gases, sounds like you have a leak at the head pipe to head connection, or you may need to block off the reed valves.

+1 on the crack. V&H pipes are known to crack,
