Ticking as the Engine Runs.

Sounds like pinging/knocking, phideo. What grade of gas are you using? Too low, and that can cause it. In about 10 seconds, four other guys will jump in here and tell you to get a fuel processor. Not an altogether bad idea, but it seems like some model year Nomads don't like that as much.

That is what we call pinging. In your case, it's probably caused by rolling on the throttle in 5th gear at 50-60. At 50-60, you should be in 4th.

phideo

That would be most likely the dreaded "ping" (aka spark knock or pre-ignition) that plagues so many Nomads. There are many many threads about tactics to enrich the fuel mixture slightly to reduce ping, reduce engine temps, improve drivability and allow use of other than premium fuel.

Post a bit more description about your bike, any mods and fuel types/conditions that improve or worsen the "ping" and you'll get a bunch of guidance on what to do.

Thanks for the responses. First off never having a Nomad before I wasn't sure what the noise was. I agree I should down shift rather than rolling on the throttle but I thought that description best decribed my scenario. Trosco you're right about checking other sites. I checked Gadget's page and he has a nice section on Pre-ignition noises.

Here's a description of my bike for you: 2004 Nomad 1500 FI, K&N Filter, Power Commander II with Vance and Hines pipes.

Thanks again for all your answers.

It depends on how it's tuned, TC. I dare say you can't tune a low-RPM roll on so it wouldn't ping.

Thats probably your engine pinging, try premium fuel and see if that cures the problem.

Thanks again for all your responses. I will try a tank full of premium ($4.50 per gallon Harumph!!) and see if that cures it. I was also thinking about adding the seafoam too. I'll let you all know the outcome.

Pre igniton can come from lots of sources. Most often we find it on the Nomads because of lean conditions and most prevalent at lower RPMs in higher gears under load. Basically what you described to be your case.

A secondary or atleast contributing factor is heat in many Nomads.

Then behind that come the "state of tune" the bike is in.

I'd suggest some things that might help besides premium fuel:

First clean the throttle body thuroughly and run a tank of sea form treated fuel through it.
Next pull the plugs and examine for excessive wear or damage to the porcelan insulators, replace if needed or clean and gap.
Third, service the cooling system and add one can of the water treatments suitable for aluminum engines that aid the water/anti freeze mixture in disapating heat. If your cooling system is recently serviced just drain a bit and add the treatment.
Finally, your PowerComander may need to be reloaded. They are programable devices with volital memory (the others we use are electro-mechanical and have no memory to loose) and they do loose their memory from time to time.

Once you have completed thse things unless there is actually something wrong with your bike you should have reduced your ping problem to a manageable level.

Ross, what is this one can of the water treatments suitable for aluminum engines that aid the water/anti freeze mixture in dissipating heat you speak of. Brand name.

I believe it's called "water wetter".

Are you saying that the PCII will lose its' memory if unplugged from the battery? I thought the program was installed in E2 memory or NON-VOLATILE memory therefore, the only way to lose it is to re-program the unit.

TC, the NAPA brand is Water Wetter as CJ says. That is what I use but there are several other. NAPA's is about $9 for a quart and a quart will treat a 2 1/2 gallon system. I'd guess you could treat a couple Nomads with one can. I like the NAPA one because it has some anti corrosives in it.

Blue, I am not a Power Comander expert but there are a number of threads on the PCIII and IV having to be reloaded because their downloaded info gets corupted. Seems to me that any memory that can be written over from a PC (it is supposed to be programable) can also be corupted by the random electrical event like say a power surge. The PCII is a older version but it is still one that is reprogramable so that's one of the places I'd look when chasing your problem. Perhaps someone here can point you to a PCII down load for a bike set up like yours?
