On my Nomad I went with 12" HD but I'm only 180lb . I've always kept the setting at 3 . It's somewhat of a stiffer ride but I like it . I haven't had any issues with bottoming out even with a passenger but like Mas said I would go with 13" . If you plan on doing long trips with lots of weight and a passenger you'll be happier with 13" HD .

Since all shocks, stock especially, are worn out by 20,000 miles it's just as important that the shocks are rebuildable. By worn out I mean the dampening is shot by 20k miles. Stock shocks cannot be rebuilt so by 20k they are nothing but springs. Quality aftermarket shocks are worth the bucks because they can be rebuilt. Cheap aftermarket are worse the stock shocks, not worth the money.

I just sent a note to the ebay vendor asking why this shows as incompatible when riders are using that shock on their Nomads

412hd
I put the HD's on my 1600 and rebuilt the forks at the same time. Incredible difference. I'm 240 and ride alone - mine are on the 2nd setting.

At my weight of 215+ I'll go with the 412 HDs.

I put 13" 412 HD's on my 2001 Nomad, I'm very happy! 270 #'s for me and 200 #'s for the wife.

In the continuing saga of what shock our Nomads take I was doing a web search for Fire & Steel accessories today and came upon an a site that is offering 412 HDs for the Nomad @ $269.00 delivered. I was just about ready to pull the trigger when I realized they were 12 inches.
Gotta read the fine print.

The 412 series shocks will not work on the 1600 without the following note from the Progressive website.
Model Notes R39 - Kawasaki VN1600 Vulcan Classic & Nomad requires # 5011-054 spacer kit to install shocks (does not apply to 812 Series). Available from Progressive Suspension or 14mm I.D. flat washers could be substituted. Instead of guessing or taking what some ebay vendor or other site tells you, just check with the manufacturer. https://www.progressivesuspension.com/

And yes, agree on the ebay vendor. The funny thing though is that he said "according to the Progressive application chart.....". Obviously didn't know what he was talking about.
