1500 Nomad Ignition Question

Hi, I have a 2000 Nomad FI...Last summer I performed the gadget modification on my key using epoxy. Long story short, when the weather reached over 100 degrees last summer, some of the epoxy apparently melted and found it's way into the ignition making it very hard to turn the bike on. Question: Has anyone ever taken apart the ignition? I'm sure there is some epoxy on the tumblers which is making it difficult to turn. I have tried spraying some silicone inside and the key turns easily...for awhile...Now I need to bite the bullet and give it a good cleaning...Any advice on how to tear it apart would be greatly appreciated...Jody

1500 Nomad Ignition Question

I would probably just try and find a locksmith. Haven't seen anything on here about anyone getting into the mechanism. I am sure there is a way. I know someone had a problem with the locking mechanism for the forks but no one knew how to get in it.

1500 Nomad Ignition Question

Ive taken the switch portain apart a couple times. Its rather straightforward, just watch for the small springs ans tiny ball that may fly out on you. As for removing the lock cylinder portion, Ive never done that myself, but if you take the switch in to a locksmith Im sure he could get it apart and clean the tumbler for you with no problem.

1500 Nomad Ignition Question

Yes be very very careful when opening up the back of the switch. I have been there before and it wasn't pretty. If you get to the point you want change, I have handlebar mounted ignition switches, that make it very nice as you don't have to reach down to get to it anymore. You can see them on my website. Link is below my sig line.

1500 Nomad Ignition Question

I've been rekeying door lock for years. The odds are very good that you will end up replacing it if you take it apart. It can be done but I'd recommend you have a pro look at it.

1500 Nomad Ignition Question

I did take it apart, although I didn't get to the tumblers, I was able to clean it by using some silicone spray...I put it back together and now for some reason when I turn the ignition to start my bike I have to turn it twice...Another words, the first click does nothing when I turn the key but when I turn the key another click, everything works fine...Not sure if this hurt if this will effect my bike in the long run though...Those screws that hold it together are sure soft and I will be heading to Ace to get some metric allen head screws...Thanks for the replies, Jody
