Used apes and cables/wires/hoses

Two questions. First, I'm looking at a set of (supposedly) genuine Wild 1 Chubby apes. They're only 12s (I was looking for 14s) but they're used and not a bad price for Chubbys. The only concern I have is that it looks like the left side controls must have caught fire? There is sort of a charred area (hard to see in the pics) where the left control wiring would have gone into the bars. Maybe the wiring shorted and the bars got hot? Anyway, will this affect anything other than the looks? The bars are chrome and scratched which doesn't matter as I would be scuffing them and painting them black anyway.

Second, what is the final word on how tall I can go before I need to buy new wires, cables and/or hoses? I don't mind a bit of rerouting as nothing on the front end is stock anymore anyway. As long as it's safe, I'm good.

Quite often the chrome cleans up really good with some chrome polish, I find the Mothers brand to be the best.
You shoud be ok with the controls on 12" bars, especially since youve changed so much already, you can reroute them a bit.

Good deal. Thanks. I'd paint them black only because I want black bars. There's a thread on another forum (I'm not a traitor, I swear) by a guy who's a painter by trade. He showed how well chrome can take paint.

Could you give a link to that thread?

Sure. Don't know if you'll be able to see the pics unless you're registered and logged in. If not, I'll PM CHAINSAW and see if I can repost the thread in it's entirety somehow.
