Maintenance records for a 253,000 mile Nomad

This guy kept a record of everything he did. It's mostly tires and oil changes.

That bike belongs to Quinton Grubbs...he is a member here (QDog I think). I met him in Elkins, WV at the Eastern Rally 2 years ago and saw the Nomad then, it had 220K on it. It was in fabulous shape then. When I talked with him New Year's Eve, he said he may be selling it because he wasn't putting the miles on it that he used to...that is an understatement.

Q is a great guy and very knowledgeable about the Nomad. He even had a car tire on it...don't know if he took it off before putting it up for sale.

Maintenance records for a 253,000 mile Nomad

That is pretty darn amazing!!

If these records are complete the things that jump out at me are;

1) First coolant change @ 189k -4 years
2) OEM Clutch spring replaced w/Barnett @ 26k
3) Barnett spring replaced just 18k later @ 44k? Hmmmmm
4) 24K first air filter changed (I guess I will keep my new one I just got for another 10K)
5) 60K first rear pads!!
6) 101K First front pads
7) 137K First battery!!
8) 150k First "real" mechanical repair(Stator)....amazing!
9) It appears it is mostly stock...no air kit, fuel proc, or aftermarket pipes.
10) It is a 2003 ruby/champaign...so not only do I have the fastest year + color, but I have the most reliable as well! (knocking on wood)

How did he get that many miles on the original cam tensioner? By our experience they wear to the limits by about 50,000 or earlier.

I don't remember him at Elkins but I would have liked to chat with him had I known he was there.
I noticed that at 204K he switched to WalMart 20W50 oil.
Thats an impressive service record, Im assuming that his stator was covered by his extended warranty.

schoeney, I have the same Nomad also and I can tell you that it is one of the better ones, but Brian and I still have the 2 best Nomads ever made. Brian has over 63,000 miles and I have over 54,000 miles and other than Brian having to replace his clutch because the springs would not last, we do not have any of the problems that everyone else seems to be having. I've never even had the problem with my clutch spring, but Brian changed it for the Barnett (just in case) and then put the original back in when I complained about how much harder the pull was.

I have 0 problems with my green and silver 06 other than hitting jeeps that hit moose. I don't consider normal service per the book to be a problem.

I had 0 problems with the 01 for that matter, other than a defective U joint from the factory. I put apx 15,000 miles on that bike in 360 days when it was stolen, all one trip other than 1,000 local miles pre trip. Can't count the crash in SD as a problem the bike had... I did that, I just don't know what went wrong... First and last chrash I can't just blame me totally.

Apparently the chains had eaten through the sleeves by then. Maybe they just don't stretch much after the limit is reached. Still will be doing mine.

The question is, what is he going to replace it with?

I guess I should keep better records. I do write down my oil and filter changes. He must have really taken care of his Nomad. I hope I can have the same success he had with his.

I don't know where he rode it. But highway miles make a huge difference. One of my friends put half a million miles on his Ford Taurus with no major issues. He drove it mostly on Interstate freeways traveling across the country. Most of the engine wear occurs during cold starts.

kind of says alot for the shell rotella and super tech filters. how can any one fault that combo. i think i will stick with the rotella and supertec filter. can't argue with success like that.

Check out line 134:

170,000 miles- New spark plug tubes and extenders.

Don't know if I missed any that were done previous, but that one caught my eye.
