Ah yes how can you tell winter is here for some, oh look an oil thread, for what it's worth depends on time of year anything from 5w40 to 20w50, all okay according to the manual, as for synthetic or dino, whichever is on sale.

Thanks my fellow Canadian (I'm married into a wonderful Canadian family) your correct about the oil, although some perform allot better then others and I hate a noisy engine because of over priced Bow Tie Oils. Cheers!

I think it would be unlikely that a "engine clatter" can be "compared" between a Air Cooled push-rod Harley...and a Cam Chain Driven, overhead twin cam Kawasaki Liquid Cooled Engine

(These Kawa'z are known for upper cyl noise..and the 'fixes" created to quiet them down)

What might those fixes be?

LOL, glad you took that the right way, I have actually used 20w50 all year round as the temperatures we see fall within the range in the manual. I have used 5w50 as Canadian Tire has their full synthetic on sale all the time, although their so called sale price is probably close to the price they should really charge all the time.

On another note, can anyone tell me the reasoning behind synthetic being a lot more expensive than Dino oil? I can see Dino oil fluctuating with the price of a barrel of oil, but synthetic doesn't rely on dino oil, or does it?

I run regular conventional Kawasaki oil. My Vaquero has 20,000 miles on it, runs like a champ, not one hiccup, not one puff of smoke.

I used the same oil in my Voyager, Kawasaki mineral oil.

Think about it, who keeps their bike long enough to notice any difference in motor/transmission longevity, mineral versus synthetic ?
Who has ever had an engine failure due to not using synthetic ?

As for 'Fix'ez" Intended to quiet down the upper cyl noise on the Big Kawk Bike's...there plenty of ongoing discussion here...and of course the proven things like 'cam chain ajuster extenders" (I'v done a few simple modifications...and the not quite as simple cam chain ajuster extender's, that -in combination- have gone a long way's toward making my 02 Nomad much quieter in the upper cyl's...I also practice a good warm-up befor departing on a first start-up (I just let my bike idle, til the cooling fan cycles)...the engine is well warmed at that point, and the oil is thinned, and distributed through the lube system and the clatter is reduced.

You think you guys are bad or opinionated on oils you should see the Victory forums and those idiots! Nothing like you idiots!

Victory makes a semi-synthetic 20-40 weight and only sell it in a kit with drain bolt washer and oil filter for $70 bucks. The zealots swear the Polaris engineers know best and any other oil is a mistake. I've ran Rotella 5-40. Mobile 1 20-50 V-Twin. Mobile 5-40 Turbo Diesel oil and right now I have regular Mobile 15-50 car oil. None of the above have extended range so no clutch slipping additives we all should avoid.

I think the bikes is quieter and runs cooler and shifts better on the car 15-50 Mobile 1 which is much less expensive than the motorcycle oils.
