Waving Tri-Ovals or Vance and Hines Twin Slash?

I know exhaust systems are a highly contested part of any bike and we all have our preferences . . . I will be buying a new exhaust for my Voyager in the next two weeks - and have it down to these two . . . My concerns:

Tri-Ovals - I am aware of the decel popping many of you get with these - exactly how bad is it and does anything really fix it?

V&H - Just how loud are they really? I'm looking for a mellow thump-thump, I don't need to wake the wife or neighbors when I sneak off, and don't need to set off car alarms as I ride past . . .I want something that says "I'm here" without shouting it . . .

Anyone with sound clips of wither of these please post them up!

For any mechanics (Like Ray) - Does anyone have dynos comparing these pipes? How do they effect your fuel mileage? I am looking to boost my mileage and will be swapping out my Cobra auto tune for a Dobek shortly as well . . . The auto tune works great - seat of pants performance wise - but the Dobek allows for 6th gear tuning - which should enable me to increase my touring mileage . . .

Any thoughts greatly appreciated . . .

You may want to consider the V&H 2-1 pro-pipe, I installed it and am quite pleased with, I have the quiet baffle installed with stove rope wrapped around instead of the fibreglass packing. You won't get a mellow thump thump with anything except maybe stock harley pipes, I put a set of those on my old 1600 nomad and was actually surprised at the sound. I only have the dyno from the pro pipe as I used the Cobra AT with the tri-ovals and then went to a PCV for the V&H. Personally while the Cobras look nice, I think the internal design of the baffle lends itself to the decel popping being more audible. Even with stock pipes you get the popping, just way more muffled, you can actually hear it if you listen closely when decelerating.

Thanks Smokey - I have considered the Pro Pipe - but - I think Baggers look uneven with a pipe on one side . . . Just me . . . I have set an internal deadline so I force myself off the fence and get a set and get them mounted before riding season is in full swing . . .

Here's the link to my dyno comparisons of the Cobra's and the V&H slip-ons.

V&H = more power for less money - also = more noise . . . why can't these decisions be easy??!!

Leave it stock for best fuel mileage. Another decision to make (g).

V&H can some one tell me if you need any gasket on them when you slide them into the header pipes. It appears not... but if anyone can tell me that have them on what they did

Slip-ons will usually improve gas mileage. I and my customers have seen upwards of 3 mpg improvement, and this is not just on Vulcans. When I installed Cobra round slash cut s/o's on my V i picked up about 1 to 1.5 mpg without any tuning.

Slip-ons have been very a popular mod on sportbikes for years as they can sometimes be considerably cheaper than a full exhaust. The late model s/bikes don't gain as much power and mpg due to most of them having restrictive catylizer boxes, the muffler is no longer the most restrictive component of the exhaust.

Thumbs Up After market slipons

For what it's worth, I have the Tri-Ovals on my 2010 Nomad. What I like about them is they will bark when you "get on it", but crusing at 70mph in 6th, I can hardly hear them at all. Very well mannered in my opinion. I don't like loud pipes. After a few hours on the road, all that noise can really become irritating. Just one mans opinion. Go with what suits you and your riding style. I have had NO issues with popping on decel with these..just saying thats my experience. Best wishes and ride safe! jdoc

Napom... I have the Tri-Ovals on my voyager and Love every mile on that bike, like jdoc said they are quiet while at crusing, but will bark like a Big Dog when you wrap the throttle. I also have the Thunder BAC and PCV and have all but eliminated any decel popping, maybe a low gurgle (for a lack of a better term) when slowing ,but they sound great. I leave most days at 4 am and have not had any complaints form the neighbors either. They really do look nice as well. I wish V&H would make the Monster Ovals for this bike, but I have been told by them no way...

Thanks for the input! I ordered a set of Tri Ovals last night off eBay - with my 10% off coupon they are shipped to my doo for $376 . . . What gasket do I need to purchase to go with this?

This all depends on how the stock ones come off, if you take the stock mufflers off and the gasket stays in the head pipe you are good to go, you don't need any gaskets.
if the gasket comes out attached to the end of the muffler tube, they need to be replaced, you can try to remove them and reuse them but you will usually damage them beyond use.. the part # of the new gasket is 11061-0240.
I got lucky and didn't have to replace them , but I have heard it go both ways....
You will Love those new pipes, and it is an easy install, good luck...
