Well things are coming along since I first posted my idea (see above link).

I've been able to aquire the mufflers and since the last week or so has been cold and rainy, I decided to give up on riding for a while and get this project on a roll.

These mufflers are usually hung on a sport bike with a stainless steel strap, but I didn't find an easy way to use that strap, and would rather not have it messing up the look anyhow (sample pic at bottom). In these pictures, I've fashioned some brackets and taped them in place, ultimately to be properly riveted to the carbon fiber and use the bike's stock muffler mount locations.

The model mufflers I got are bolt-on, rather than slip-on, so I drew up some flanges and had them waterjeted complete.

So, do those sportbike mufflers provide the backpressure required to keep the low end torque of the Vaquero.

Well, they are no less straight through than the Screamin' Eagles I had on my Nomad. If that length of pipe isn't enough by itself, I'll add torque cones.

These mufflers are also specified for use on the Suzuki TL1000, a 1000cc 90degree V-twin. They do happen to also be labeled "closed course only", but included screw-in silencers that should also further restrict air flow, however only slightly. Yoshimura tech support has been some help with questions like this too.

;) Then you understand some of the blank stares I get when I describe what I'm doing. I've never been much of one to follow the crowd. Besides, how can you be a rebel by doing the same thing everyone else is doing? ;)

Good point. :) How about a sound clip? Most of the bikes those cans are normally on have more than 2 cylinders and rev much higher. Not sure if it would sound right. (Or it could sound absolutely awesome and I'll be the first to say I'm wrong.) Unless you're going for the crotch rocket sound.

I'm 4 it! However the stock pipes on my 07 drag in curves, hope you're alllowing for ground clearance? I'll bet it sounds GREAT! 2 thumbs up on the idea..

I just hope your Vaquero doesn't end up sounding like a Dyson vacuum. Not really my cup of tea either, but I am a tinkerer myself and curious about the outcome.

Well the TL1000 is a V-twin. I knew a guy with a TL and the Yoshi pipes. Sitting at a stop light the low "thump" was impressive. That's pretty much what inspired these mufflers specifically. Sure the TL red lines at 11,000 rpm, but I know how good it sounded even in the lower R's to not be worried.
It will definitely have a sportier sound, I feel. My neighbor has the [fairly] new Pontiac GTO, but put traditional glass packs on it. I don't think a car like that should sound like an old farm truck, but that's my opinion.

If it doesn't work, it doesn't work. But if I never tired, I'd never know.

Goose, I've heard several of you guys mention that, but I've never dragged my mufflers, even on my old Nomad. Stock, Vance and Hines, or Screamin' Eagles - Never touched any of them to the pavement. I'm no ginger when it comes to riding either. I will drag floorboards however. I generally opt out of leading any group rides, even a group of 3, because it wears me out to have open road ahead, but corner as slow as many people do. I'll lead when it's me and my dad, because I know he can keep up. ;)

jestephens --- Never thought about the TL1000. I just YouTube'd it. Still not a sound *I* would go for but definitely different than I was expecting. Don't get me wrong. I gotta give you props for trying something new.

The cats are built in the mufflers of the 1700's. Once they're removed, so are the catalytic converters.

My stock mufflers are currently straight through. I opened them up at the inlet end, removed the cat material, inserted a straight pipe, and welded it all back together.
