LOL. Nope. That doesn't have ABS (optional on '10s and standard on '11s). I think, if I were to "trade up", I'd probably get a Can Am. I'm still hoping I can make the Nomad work. It's a nice bike (although it needs Ivans touch) and I got a good deal.

Not painted to match. And anyway...I prefer glass to a dash...I wanna see the road, not a CD player...I'm not sure what your buffeting issue is, but my '09 doesn't do any at all so I'm hoping you get it sorted out...you're not 6'9" tall are you...???

The correct windshield height is very important.
A 14" windshield came on my Yamaha. I was getting blown everywhere.
Bought a 16" (just 2" taller) and it was a night and day difference.

See this link on how to choose the correct height shield.

It also helps to raise your lowers so they are as close to the bottom of your shield as possible.

Anyway you can adjust the angle of the wind screen?
With my Shield ( before my Reckless Fairing) and Lowers on my 1500 classic were good.
Not sure what would make the 1700 that much different.

At what point is the wind hitting you? top of helmet, face shield level on the helmet? How far over are you looking on the shield?
I have done a lot of Taping things on and fabricating of cardboard on my last bike to make things better. Cut my own shield eventually.

Heh. Not 6'9". I'm about 6'1" but tall from the waist up. My bike is black and white. A black gelcoated fairing would work well.

I can't move my lowers but with the screen all the way down, there's only an inch or so between the screen and lowers.


Judging by that measuring page, it looks like I need a couple more inches on the screen to be optimal. I'd hate to spend $200+ on a new windscreen just to find that it didn't resolve the issues.

Not that I'm aware of. The majority of the wind is hitting me at helmet level although I get rough air from chest level up. I'm not going to fabricate anything. I'm not good at it, I don't have the tools and my "garage" is a concrete apron. If I can't bolt it on (and maybe add a wiring connection to the battery) I won't do it to my bike.

Have you tried crouching down to duplicate having a higher windshield on ?

Ok Then, The chest area is coming off your gas tank. If it is anything like I experienced before. I discovered this on a long trip when I lifted my foot (one at a time), sole forward and played with the height I found the sweet spot that stopped the air coming around and up from the tank. This is where/ the height I located my lowers. If you put your hand on the side of the tank like you are pushing down along the side of the tank, How much air is coming up at you? Funny part is Lowers helped stop this. Funny to me because I really do not understand aerodynamics that much.

I did but didn't feel much of a difference. OTOH, I didn't stay crouched down for long. I just ordered one of those top windscreen extenders. $40 is a heck of a lot cheaper than either a new (larger) windscreen or a batwing fairing. If this doesn't work, I'll move on to Plan C (or D).

I don't know how to block off whatever's coming off the tank. I mean, I can always buy a bunch of foam rubber and stick/tape it all over the place but I'm not riding around that way for more than a single trip. I don't feel much air along the sides of the tank.

I had one of those fairing extenders on a Yamaha FJR and I tried multiple positions but never got it to help reduce the buffeting.

To isolate the direction entry of the air will require a little experimenting. You don't have a wind tunnel so make something that will work like one.

Take some knitting yarn and cut it into short strips, about 1 1/2" long. Cut a lot of them. Then take some tape and put the tape on one end them and into rows where they are side by side on the fuel tank and any thing that has a surface you can make rows on.

Then ride at different speeds and see which way they flow and what happens when you block the air flow around them.

You can also place them on small pieces of cardboard and move it around to see the air currents.

I've seen this done on the surfaces of airplane wings to test the stall characteristics and air flow.

Looking back to the original post, I took a look at your Chucksters lowers. DUDE... they be big !! They cover a lot of your front without much room for air to flow. Yet the air that does flow thru would be concentrated. Have you tried to slide them down some on the forks?
Angling them back could be problematic with your turning radius, but back as far as you dare would be my first try. Just a thought.
