Engine sounds

I have a 1500fi nomad 2001 with 87k on it. Put a new, larger windshield on my batwing fairing and now I can hear a lot of sounds I haven't heard before. I have had for a while an oscillation in 4th gear both a vibration and sound. The bike runs well and is in great shape. I bought it last year and changed to full synthetic oil. Transmission issues I assume? Looking for some direction. I do all of my own work.

I have a 2000. I get worried if I don't hear the sounds and rattles. I've gotten accustom to the them.

U-joints, drive line, bevel gear and bearings might be some things to check.

That sounds like a good place to start. You should do the easy(er) stuff before you assume the worst. Thanks for the direction. Don't know why I didn't think of the drive shaft/u joint

Get used to it. These things make more noises than a $10 hooker.

there's definitely nothing wrong with taking a fine tooth comb over your entire bike . I do it all the time . I going to assume the cam chain tensioners ( extenders ) have been done . It would also be something I would look into .

One thing I learned when I first bought my 01 is that they do make one hell of racket .

If my 02 Nomad sits for a week or more, 1 of the lifters will complain for several minutes, until the temp comes up and the oil gets flowing good.. I just choke it up to her personality. Like many of us, we have a few creaks and growns when we first get going. Those are the sounds that make me love her all that much more...

Well it's amazing how fast it went from a little oscillation to a bad vibration. Took the swing arm off and low and behold the u joint was worn out and had worn the castings on the shaft. Anyone know what years are compatible with the 2001 nomad? I am going to replace the drive shaft along with the U joint.

As long as you use the ones that fall within the certain family years, you'll be OK. Like 99-2004 will all be the same. MAS will probably verify this, so some of our other wrenching bros./members....

All of the 1500s are the same.

The 1600s are slightly longer to accommodate the different swingarm.

Thanks that's what I thought. I did find several parts diagrams for different years and the part number was the same in each

And this is why you want to investigate those oscillations . Found a drive shaft and u joint with very low milage for $12 including shipping on ebay. Running like new again.
