Spark knock???

A week and a half ago took a 250 mile ride. Topped the fuel tank off after about 90 miles into the ride. Later on, when cruising around 70mph, I cracked the throttle and heard a rattle (like spark knock). I've heard it couple of times since, but only when I'm rolling along and then crack on the gas. If I roll throttle easy, no noise. Could I have gotten bad gas? I just turned 2K on my '08 Nomad, never heard this noise before that. Need help to figure out whats going on.

It's pre-ignition or pinging, most likely. Very common with Nomads. It's usual cause is a too lean air-fuel mixture. Again, quite common with Nomads.

My 2007 pinged like crazy, especially in the Phoenix heat. After adding a fuel processor and richening up the mixture some, it pings very occassionally now.
You say you had just filled up before you heard the sound. Did you fill up with premium?

Yes, filled up with premium. Is there anything I can do short term...less expensive?

Could just be the gas you got. Premium can range anywhere from 91 to 93 octane depending on the brand. Might have just been a poor batch also.
Cheap short term fix is to put some octane booster in the tank and keep an eye on the posted octane at various stations.

It's possible the premium you filled up with may not have been premium. It's been known to happen. Run this tank out and then fill up with some quality premium and see if the problem goes away.

Is there a particular brand/type of fuel processor to get? What have others bought? Thanks for the input.

A lot of people on this forum have bought the Dobeck (Techlusion) TfI. They are real easy to install and tune and there are lots of people to ask on here regarding their bike mods and their TFI settings.
www.customdynamics.com used to have the best price. Dont know if they still do.

Get the plug and play model. They install in about 45 minutes. Take the gas tank off to make the install easy and while the tank is off tighten all the rad hose clamps. Almost guaranteed they are loose.

A fuel processor is a must. I cannot believe the improved performance with the bike. Your bike will also run cooler, and there is not much need for a higher octane fuel.

I purchased the Dobeck Techlusion TFI. If I can install one, anyone can.

I have the Cobra FI2000R fuel processor. Either one is a good choice. I know the Cobra is fairly easy to install. You are going to spend about $200 no matter which unit decide to go with.

Spark knock???

With more current results I am leaning on the side of the TFI as best. I have installed 5 of these all solder on style. I have never installed a Plug n' Play, or Cobra.

As of late I am having some difficulty understanding the Cobra set up, which works well for some guys and not so well for others, which I don't understand.

My main issue is the the TFI shows instant results, not much guessing. With pot 4 set to 9:00 to count RPM, then pot one turned clock wise gets instant more RPM, where the Cobra seems to not do anything according to these guys i read about.

My next take was to have these guys hold RPM to around 2,400 rpm and try to get the Cobra pot 1 to show more RPM that way.

Just turning the pot screws haphazardly and guessing the mix has changed isn't the way I work.

Like I said some of these guys get good results with the Cobra unit and at one time I thought the TFI and Cobra units were about equal, but I am not so sure at this point.

I will catch hell for this post.

But when I do, I will want to know How Do you KNOW that Cobra is working, and How do you KNOW that mix is set up right?

Each of 5 TFI set ups I did I could not set final mix before I turned the black knob engine air knob down some. Idle RPM became too high, for the additional fuel all 5 times.

Cutting air, dropping RPM, then adjusting to fine turn pot 1 on the TFI still increased RPM.

Finding the best RPM, then lowering idle once more, and refine that is the best possible mix.

Now remember I have NO hands on with a Cobra unit. I know I am going to hate results of this post.

As I was reading your post there was a lawyer from Cobra looking over my shoulder.
He left here not looking very happy.
Mumbled something on his way out.
I think it was something like 'Hit Man' or ‘contract’?
I'm not sure.
Mike

Good I could use some fun around here as of late.

Hit men bleed red blood just like anyone else.

You better tell the scumbag lawyer that I hunt Mastadon with flint tipped spears, and have special ritual sacrifices where blood letting very slowly is required.

Tell the hit man I will be where the darkest place is at night. That dark place is me. On the other hand he will be the other too dark place in night too.

Ah hunting games, I just love hunting games.

On Edit: I totally forgot you are kinda new around here. You better give the Lawyer this, to give to the Hitman so he stands a chance of getting away alive.

This is really me.
