Deer Season, but watch out for the cows too

This morning about 530 we toned out for a life flight standby assignment at the scene of a Motorcycle vs Cow accident.
This one hit close to home as the rider was one of of our guys from Pasadena Station 5. Apparently several cows got out of their adjacent pasture and wandered into the dark roadway ( 6 lane boulevarded road / 55 mph posted speed) and he nailed one of them and was thrown over the bars of his Ultra Classic and onto the roadway. Keith was conscious and alert and talking to the medics prior to being flown to the trauma center. He suffered a fractured Jaw, possible sinus cavity fracture, and fractured kneecap along with numerous abrasions and contusions. He will recover but it will take a while. No, he wasnt wearing a helmet, and prior to this event he never has. Hopefully this will change his mind.

Thanks for letting us know Larry. I sure hope he does fine. He was very lucky as it could have been a lot worse. Hopefully he will start using a helmet now. It only takes one accident to realize your head needs protection.

Keith is stable, and will be having surgery tomorrow to wire his fractured jaw shut. Apparently the test run of soft food was unsuccessful so he will be on liquids for a while as the bones mend. His gear rack at Station 5 may be adorned with a cow skull when he gets back able to answer alarms again....

About thirty years ago my pal hit a bull on the road as he crested a hill. It took him off the bike and he came out of it OK , the bull seemed OK as well, but the bike was a total loss.
