Lucky me I live in a really small town and the big 3 shops over in Montgomery have an extremely limited selection and higher prices than Internet vendors. Case in point.... Been looking for a helmet and all the ones I have liked online are not available locally. Can't even try them on. It's a fact of living in this region. Thank good eddy for the internet

My local dealer has nothing in stock, it seems no matter what I ever go to them for, it has to be ordered in. He wants me to go pay for it before he orders the parts, then wait until they come in, resulting in two trips to his shop. Whereas I can order it myself online in many cases, and it arrives at my door almost always cheaper.

He'll wind up weighted to the bottom of it if my local guy finds out about him.

I try to buy local but allot of what I want to buy is not in stock. One thing I will not do and think unkindly of those who do it is go to a local store, look the product over. Even try it on and then buy it from Amazon.

I buy lap dances locally.
I don't want the mom and pop strip clubs to close up shop.

There's my contribution to the local economy.

I went looking for an oil filter today. The cheapest place where I could find it was at a Yamaha dealer for a Honda filter. They wanted $13.99. The K&N filter was priced as $15.99 and $16.99 respectively at two local auto parts stores. I came home and went on Amazon. I can get that same K&N filter for under $11 with free two day shipping.

Tell me, why in my right mind would I ever again go to a local store to buy a filter? I would have to burn my time and my gas and by the time I got it home that filter would have probably cost me $20.

This was just a stupid little filter but the same is true for tens of thousands of items. Unless you need something right away, shopping local just doesn't make sense financially. Sad but true.
If a $6 difference rubs you the wrong way, try this one:

I had a blow out north of here two weeks ago (rear wheel, spoked wheels (Drifter), the tube blew - not sure if the tire can be salvaged, probably not, but haven't taken it off the bike yet to examine it). So I go to a dealership where I'm offered a Harley tire as a replacement for a mere $300. The sidewalls are very stiff so I would not be able to install that myself, for $100 extra, they will install it, but wait, if a machine is needed to install it that means a machine to remove it once it's worn out: tack on an extra $100 for installation of the next tire. So for a total of $500 I can opt for this replacement tire. I pull out my trusty computer and that same tire would be $200 on the web - shipping would be free - but if I opted for an Avon tire to match the one on my bike, I can install that myself and eliminate $200 in installation charges. Should anyone be surprised at what my final decision will be ?

(As to why the rear wheel is still sitting on the bike after two weeks - we're rebuilding a camp that was destroyed by an arsonist last winter. I should get around to fixing the bike later this week.)
