Another question for you Caddmann users

Has anyone here used the Spectre cotton fiber reusable filters? They come in white, blue, and red. Seems like a cheaper alternative to the K&N brand.
Thanks, Mark...

If I remember right, that's what Caddmann used on his Nomad. There's someone here that uses one, I can't remember who though.

I did read that some of them had issues sealing to the backing plate, but they figured that was a bad batch so newer (current) stock should address that. They are an oiled filter so should provide some of the same wet weather protection that the K&N does and are washable so a decent alternative I think to K&N. can't beat the price either.

I am planning to get them actually, just have not got around to ordering some and want to get a rain cover as well.

The red dye will bleed out and make red puddles, but other than that they work fine.

The rain thing is a myth... I run the cheapo paper filters and in 6,000 miles with lots and lots of rain they turn gray, but they still work.

There is always a trade off.

K&N is more open weave and so gets the most air, and even uses dirt to strain the air. This wll allow the most dirt to pass as well and more so it you clean it often.

Cloth is the tighter weave so the most restrictive, but the cleanest over all. Paper is very similar and not as long lasting but cheaper.

I have the spectra and have had no problems so far. I have been running it for about 2500 miles. I did have to put some foam insulation around the inside edge to get it to seal right.

OK, another question. I read that if I use the stock filter inside my new filter, I don't need to use a block-off plate. I mocked it up and it seemed to fit real well. What happens if I go without the filter in a filter, or the block-off plate, and just use the filter?
Thanks, Mark...

If you go without the inner filter and no block off plate, the air from that side is no longer filtered and has a direct (as direct as stock air that is) path into the intake. This is NOT recommended. I personally don't care for the filter in a filter because I don't trust I am getting a complete seal, I would take the few minutes to make the block off plate, all you need is a small piece of aluminum and some high heat sealant and you have no issues.

There is no point of a filter in a filter and it will just restrict air flow, and deafeat the purpose.

Kind of like having a Trans Am that has a engine decal saying 454 and having a in line 6 banger under the hood. That is the wrong way to go. The better way to go is to put a 351 Cleveland with a pantera axel in a VW Bug...
