? For Those Who Have Added a Trunk

Did adding a trunk and using the wompus rack cause any changes to the handling or driveability of the bike? Just curious as I know the wompus rack I have is heavy plus adding a heavy trunk over the back wheel i imagine would have to cause some riding or handling change of some sort?

Is definitely makes it top heavier when loaded down, but like everything else on the bike, you will adjust within 2 weeks and ride accordingly. I also increases your side profile if you live in a windy state. Personally, I will always have a bike with a trunk for the convenience factor.

These bikes are so big and heavy anyway that you will get used to it quite quickly and wont even notice it back there. Enjoy the extra space and additional passenger comfort.

Really, if you're riding two up whatever weight in the trunk and side bags may be its secondary and only comes into play during slow speed manuvers.

My first setup had the trunk about as far back as I could set it up and when I loaded the trunk and the Dekker supreme bag on top of the trunk and headed out for 2 up tours I noticed the front end was definitely lighter, almost skittish. Moved the trunk forward a bit and that solved the problem.

Like everyone mentioned, you'll get used to it, first couple of rides were weird at best, extra weight and a little balancing act at lower speeds, but after a while you'll forget it and you will enjoy the extra space... tha ladies like the comfort too =)

Added a Harley knock-off tour pack with a Wompus rack. I only notice it at low speeds. I did notice that the Wompus rack sets the trunk a little higher on the Nomads than they sit on a Harley.

So just curious, how close to the top of the license plate reflectors does the wompus rack sit?

I had a Scootworks trunk on a Wompus rack on my 2007. I didn't notice any big difference in handling. You'll get used to it in no time. Even fully loaded it wasn't that bad.

I removed the reflectors from the the license plate holder. My bottom of the HD tour pak sit's very close to the plate and plate frame.

As far as handling goes....I didn't notice much if any diff. in handling.
[ although I did have a Yamaha trunk on prior to the HD tour pak so I wouldn't have noticed I don't think]

I have the tour pak up as far as I can, I think, without eliminating any chance of someone bigger than a small child riding back there. I have a backrest in place which makes for less room too. I also ride solo. Slap an HD "batwing" fairing on the frt. though and you will see a difference. It makes the frt. end significantly heavier with the radio and gauges.

I have to say that when I added my trunk, with a 3.5 gallon aux fuel tank, I didn't notice any difference in handling at all. Perhaps it is more noticeable if the trunk is mounted further to the rear.

It's really no different than riding with a rear bag attached to the rack that used to be on the back, I had no problems with the Harley top box I mounted on mine.

I have an aftermarket lay-down licence plate holder. The Wompus rack sits exactly 2 1/2 inches from the top of the plate holder. Plenty of room and the plate is very visible from the back.

I am in the process of adding a tour pak to mine. Was going to make a rack that uses the stock grab handles but that would position the trunk way too high up and too far back. So I'm machining my own side brackets so the top surface where the box will sit is 3 1/2" below the back of the rear seat. I am hoping that the lower mount will keep it from being top heavy. A buddy of mine just bought a HD Electra Glide last yr. and he noticed that is was rather top heavy compared to his Heritage he was used to. I have a set of grab handles from a 98 Voyager I am going to incorporate into the mount so the little woman still has something to grab on to.
