1500 just quit at 60 mph....

My 2002 Nomad has about 5,500 miles...took off on a trip to Arkansas last week and about 65 miles from home and at about 60 mph...it just quit running...would NOT restart..it would turn over....pleanty of gas..
The bike is stock except for the power commander.....trailered it to the local shop which is a Honda shop and they looked at it..found a 15 amp fuse under the seat that had burned out..replaced it and during a test drive it blew again....and again...they think it is a bad short but where?? The shop mgr thinks it may be a bad power commander...but they just have no good clue for sure...any ideas..it has never done this before or given me a moments problem...always started right up quickly and run fine...

Look for a pinched or nicked wire that could be shorting out. If none are found, disconnect the PC and take it for a test ride. If the fuse doesn't blow, that would narrow it down quickly. What circuit is this 15 amp fuse protecting?

I'm not sure..I think they said it was on the fuel pump circut which only draws about 7 amps..maybe the power commander is on it too...

I blew the same fuse when one of the wires to my idle control solenoids shorted out. To find out of it's the power commander, disconnect it and connect the wires back to the injectors. I really think you have a wire that's shorted out somewhere. This could be hard to find.

15 amp fuse under the seat? My memory might be bad, but the only fuse I recall under the seat is alone. The main fuse and it is rated at 30 amps..

So far as I recall all the rest of the stock fuses are under the right side cover with the coolant.

I always speak in right / left as seated..

There is a known issue where the wire harness running up and over cly 2 on the left (as seated) rubs thru.

If you can ID this fuse better, so long as it is stock I have a year 2000 book I can look it up in.

On my '99, the main fuse is in the right side cover, with the coolant overflow. The fuse block is in front of the battery. I don't remember seeing any 15 amp fuses, but the main fuse is 30 amp.

I don't know about an 02'.... but on an 06' thats the ECU's fuse.
At least that's what the manual says. It also fuses the extra elec. connection
under the seat.

With all my bling, a 15 amp main fuse would not have a chance.

My fuse under the seat is a 30 amp on my 2007.

I bet Mac or CJ have this problem identified.

I am not clear on what fuse this can be. The 1500 has a 30 amp fuse under the seat. So if there is a 15 amp fuse in that holder it is the wrong fuse..

If the power commander has a 15 amp fuse in the first place i wouldn't know why. I can't even guess the PC III uses a 15 amp fuse.

SO just what is this mystery fuse?

Well, there seems to be some confusion regarding the fuses, their locations and sizes.

On the 2005-2008 models the service manual provides this information:

Main Fuse - 30 amps. This fuse is located behind the right side cover. You have to remove the coolant reservoir tank to gain access to the Starter Relay. The Main fuse is on the Relay assembly. See the following image taken from the manual:

ECU or DFI fuse - 15 amps. This fuse is located beneath the seat and is next to the ECU. This fuse does NOT power the accessory connections under the seat and in the headlight bucket. See the image below:

Fuses in the Junction Box. The accessory connections are powered by fuse A. This is a 10 amp fuse. See image below:

Again, this information comes from the manual for 2005-2008 models. I can't comment on the 1999-2004 as I don't have a manual for those.

Not trying to step on anyone's toes, just hoping to eliminate any possible confusion.

Well, I guess I was half right.
I knew it was the ECU fuse.
My mistake on the acc. connections.
My toes feel fine ;)
Thanks for the info Bob
