5 wire harness

Sorry if this has been talked about before, but couldn't find in old post. My bike has a four wire Hoopy converter on it now. The new trailer has a 5 wire on it. Do any of the trailer puling people, know were I can find a 5 wire converter kit? Thanks

Why does your trailer have a five wire plug? Is one wire for constant power or a spare? It may be easier to put a four prong plug on the trailer.

Isn't the 5th wire just a ground? I would be looking for a converter plug from 5 round? to 4 Flat. OR I would be gettting the trailer re-wired for the for flat.

And OR is the 5th wire for some lamp?

Tell me what you got and maybe I can help better.

LOL Ring and I are like hungery vultures hanging out waiting, err no, hoping for someone to break something!

The main purpose of the Hoppy 46255 converter is to covert a 5 wire vehicle, like the Nomad to 4 wires for trailering purposes. The bike has these 5 wires:

brake, right turn, left turn, tail and ground

and combines the stop/turn signal function to operate on a trailer with this 4 wire design:

brake/right turn, brake/left turn, tail, ground

A 5th wire on a trailer would be used if the brake and turn signals are separate, or if electric trailer brakes are used, or for backup lights (useful on a Goldwing).

So if you have a 5-wire bike and a 5-wire trailer, no converter is required. However, the other function of the Hoppy 46255 is to isolate the trailer wiring from the bike circuits so if something on the trailer shorts, the bike isn't affected as it would be if the converter wasn't there.

Thanks fellows. Cactusjack is right ! The brakes and turn signals are on seperate lines.
As for the bike already being a five wire system, I didn't know!! This is the reason I
like this group of people. Good answers. I just set back and read, for an evening
on motorcycle school. Love hands on. Thanks Again

I was just talking the trailer. The Nomad is wired like a foreign car. All foreign cars I know of have seperate wiring for brake/turn sigs.

American cars on the other hand share the same bulb fliment for brake turn sigs.. When both wires are On the bulb goes out for that moment in time the flasher is working, leaving the other brake lamp lit on a car..

The problem comes with a foreign vehical and a American set up trailer. There are other converters that can do the same thing, but this one works like Cj said.

It is nice to know that if the trailer dead shorts it won't fry the Nomads chaging system. The cheap lighting on most trailer kits is prone to dead shorting too.

Some of the harbor freight trailers seem to loose ground on one side or the other at times and so can do about anything electricly odd.

How that happens is past my ability. The frames are thru bolted squares and I see no way one side can be grounded when the other side isn't, but it happens.
