It could be either, depending on the year.. If there is a cable to the ft forks and thence to the wheel hub, not going to the brakes it's a cable drive.

If not it's electric, and has a sencor on the tranny under the left side engine cover, near where the clutch slave is, but further back. Saying clutch slave is to just ID the rough area.

Problems could be a bad connection at any, or a bad sender. What else isn't working if anything, as that may lead to a bad connection.

No 06 has cable speedo. That set up is all electronic. Does the needle move on first turn of the key? It should fly all the way to the other side of the meter in the self check test. And then return.

Hmmmmmm..... No spiders in the glass where you can see right? No Fla mung growing under there at all?

If not I would pop off the nacell and unplug the connectors there and plug them back in a couple times. Maybe there is mung on the connector pins...

I know the smaller connector mostly goes to the key switch, and the larger mostly goes to the speedo unit and does other functions, but pull both apart. That is the devils own work too. The top female connector has a release tab to pull the connectors apart, and the female connector has a under side release to pull it off the frame holder. These are a wicked pain to get at.

Then test. If that doesn't work you will need to go deeper. No joke about spiders either. The instrument is that sensitive.

The 1600 speedo has a lense that comes right off. The 1500 isn't close to the same..

B, Been there and done that with the same symptoms on the speedo. If you have a service manual (there is one available third line down in this garage section) go to the electrical section/system and browse through there. It will tell you how to do different kinds of checks on the speedo (they call it a "meter") I ended up replacing mine with one I got off ebay, and it had almost 25,000 less miles on it too.

I don't use my speedo either much, it just is in a bad place to suit me. If I look down I tend to end up down. The point is I like what is on the bike to be working. I am sure you do to.

I think I have a bad connection on the blue hi beam indicator, but I only get one chance to fix it. Last year it didn't light on first Spring start up and again it didn't this time. Basicly all I did was unplug these 2 connectors and it works again.. I need more trouble with it before I can nail down a cause/fault.

I did my time in Fla. Didn't like the T storms much and didn't like no winta'. 2 years there was enough for me.

Right now it's skeeter hell here, I just walked the dogs and we got ate alive. Worst I seen them in many years right now. Tamworth is just south of the kanc apx 14 miles, so it's woodsie and real buggy.

I stay here for 4 reasons. 1 is ok gun laws, 2 is sugar maple since I make the sugar, 3 is decent riding in season with out any need to go very far, and 4 is i can't find a better place to be.

I live by seasons, not a clock, so it works well for me.
