Ossienomad. How long have you ridden the bike since since you cleaned the fuel filter in the pump ? I did the same thing and the screaming stopped for about 15 miles, then it came back.

more on fuel pump

The part is definately mitsubishi. It is also used by other motorcycle manufacturers including suzuki. It is a very common pump and after market ones can be bought for as little as $30.00

So if the pump is cheap and mounts directly to kawasaki fuel pump housing then it should be possible to plumb a line from outlet side of pump into a conventional fuel filter then back out through fuel pump housing outlet. Thing to consider may be the need for overflow valve that is incorporated into the plastic housing that surrounds the pump

I'll speak with some fuel injection experts and see what they think. I know they do this routinely on motor cars.

Any thoughts or ideas on this from the members here?

Hi redjay,

Rode about 240 kilometers and no squeeling. Last time I flushed it i didnt use compressed air as suggested by trosco and the squeeling was back soon after. I'm hoping the compressed air will will make the difference. I dont believe that this is a long term fix and thats why I'm continuing with inquiries re replacement. I am confident that the problem lies in the plastic that surrounds pump not in pump itself. Thanks mark.

You can also backwash the filter useing clean gas and air pressure , about 20 psi. Fill filter every time you backwash repeat several times..

You might want to do this out side with no source of spark, etc around.

I decided to take the tank apart and change the fuel filter today. I went and bought the Mitsubishi fuel pump too so I could compare it to what I had. The new pump was a lot bigger than what is used in the 2004 1500FI. Unfortunately I took the fuel pump back before I thought of laying them side by side and taking a picture. After putting the replacement filter (NAPA 3002) I could not get it into the tank since the filter was wider. Went to NAPA to get a small diameter filter with no luck. Had no choice but to back wash the one that came with the bike The picture I posted is the wash out after the third time!! I did it at least ten more times until I started getting cleaner fluid coming out. The reason I wanted to replace my filter was, when going slow it seemed to run rough and it seemed like it wanted to die. At high rpm’s, it seemed to run great. I will find out tomorrow if this did the trick. I did call the Kaw dealer in town asking for the filter and the price was $500 since it comes with the fuel pump!!

The pic is kind of hard to see and understand, but as long as you wash all the crud out of the filter it should work again.

What ever I was washing out of the filter I would put in a milk jug just to see how bad or how much was being cleaned. The third time I put some breakclean into the filter and after shaking it, then pouring it out into the jug I took a picture to show how dirty the filter was. The brown triangle you see is the dirty breakclean out of the filter. Sorry picture didnt turnout well!

May want to check out other gas stations in your area. It seems like your having to clean out your filter way too often.

Check for rust inside the tank as well!

This has been quite a weekend with the Nomad! This bike is an 04, which I bought last year in September with about 9500miles. This was the first time I have ever cleaned the filter, dholmer…for that matter as far I know it might have been the only time it has been done on this bike! Got the bike back together Friday rode it to the gas station and filled her up with premium gasoline. Took her for a long spin witch included the interstate. Got back to town and it was still acting up. It felt like I had a warped rotor because that is how the bike was jerking just riding in a parking lot at idle. Went back home and since the oil was hot I went ahead and changed the oil and filter. Came in the house read on what people’s thoughts on this similar issue and saw a suggestion on plugs. So the next day went and got a set of plugs…… and it was still the same. A buddy and I had planned on going for a ride that day and so went ahead and went. We stopped a couple times to discuss what was going on and on one of the stops we decided to keep the engine running and remove a plug at a time until it just run on one plug. Then put one back, remove the one that was on before and so worth. Bike kept running on one plug….didn’t matter which one! Our thought went to bad gas but I had just filled it up with fresh fuel….except for the one gallon that I had removes when I took the tank off! I had filtered it and put it back in the tank so I could make it to the gas station to fill it up! So we decided I need to start with completely fresh fuel so we run it for about 100mile and came back to town when the fuel light came on! Came back to my house, removed the tank and removed the pump and filter. Pumped the rest of the fuel out the tank. Run fuel through the filter, no restriction. Submersed fuel pump in fuel and run it…no restriction! Put everything back together, went and got a couple of gallons of fuel and took the bike around the block. First block it run rough again, then it smoothed out. This morning filled it up and took her out with no problems. Moral of the story, DON’T BE A DAMB ASS LIKE ME AND PUT BACK THE FUEL YOU TOOK OUT THAT WAS CAUSING YOU PROBLEMS!!
I finally had a good nights sleep last night! The good thing that came out of this, apart from the fact that I can take a fuel tank out in less than a five minuets, is that I have a cleaner fuel filter and clean tank, new plugs, tightened the coolant hose under nether the tank that leaks on these Nomads and hooked up my led lights under the fuel tank. Since I was in a better mood this afternoon I went ahead and bleed my brakes and clutch lines so I have clean brake fluid in the lines.
Boogity,boogity boo! Let’s go Riding!!

It sounds like you may have had some water in the fuel, gas line anti freeze would have cured that if it was the problem.

I did add fuel drier (isopropyl) and let it run before I ventured in removing the tank. It didnt seem to help

Thanks Brad! Mine is a 2004 1500 so this pump would not be the right one. I do have an extra pump now though since my problem was a wire on the throttle position sensor that would break the soder on hot days and make the bike act up. I have been meaning to do a write up on the pump and such but been busy riding! Will have to wait till winter
