Hot Weather Riding

In the summer here in Phoenix, I drink 3-4 liters of water every day to keep hydrated. The Sunday prior to the Mesquite Rally I boosted that to 6 liters/day, knowing what I was going to be in for. Like Trip, I carry or buy water on every ride and drink about 1/2 liter an hour, depending on the temp.

I've said this before and I'll say it again. Look at the guys who do roofing, paving, and landscaping for a living. Around here, they are fully covered. Long sleeve shirts, long pants, a hat and a do-rag covering their necks. This is in 110-115 degree heat. Look at the nomadic tribes of the Sahara, they aren't riding camels in bermuda shorts and Crocs. They are covered from head to toe. I have taken to wearing a long-sleeve t-shirt when riding to keep the sun off my skin. The body has a very efficient cooling system and it is more efficient when your skin isn't exposed to the sun.

I have a Powertrip Mojave mesh jacket I bought a week or two before the rally. Other than where the body armor is, it breathes very well and I can't say I'm any less comfortable when wearing it than when I'm not. At least while I'm moving - it does get hot if I'm just sitting in the sun with it on.
