good info; textbook MSF stuff. Not sure I 100% agree with the "push the envelope" idea in the last paragraph of Part I. Maybe it's just how he worded it.

Hey DS,
I feel pushing the envelope is an important tool too. I think he may have meant something like: Riding your bike in a parking lot and trying to stop in the shortest distance you safely are able. I would call that pushing the envelope. Many of the manuvers that are taught in the MSF classes are supposed to be practiced on your own bike. Until you've mastered those manuvers on your own rig you are definitely pushing the envelope. I remember when I went from my 800 kawa to the Nomad......wow what a difference and even though I'm a MSF rider coach, when I went to the parking lot the first 10 times, I was pushing the envelope each time. I think it was just the wording that is kind of mis-leading. vin |

I think you're right flight doc. There might be a fine line between riding outside your skill level and pushing the envelope. I think it is paramount that we fine tune our skills. We should all want to be the best riders we can from a safety standpoint so we can react appropriatley and confidently to hazards. I interept 'pushing the envelope' as periodically doing things outside my comfort zone to build my confidence. Things that used to be outside my comfort zone are now well within my compfort zone. And I still have a long way to go! JM2CW
