That would explain the black smoke. Those welding rods really do work, and could easily fill any hole in the tube.

That could be it miss firing due to the oil on the plug. Without a better description, it's hard to say. How about posting a video, if this poxy site will let you.

No oil on plug just in plug tube and on plug wire. I will try to post a video if I can figure it out. Just returned from a shop that will work it. Right at $2000 to diagnose!! That’s $850 each way to remove/replace engine and then taking a peek inside.

Jesus!!. Thats storming money for just a days work. You could end up paying them a fortune if it needs parts, and the time to fit them. You could buy another bike for that, and part yours out.

That is ridiculous. The first thing would be a compression test before they yank the motor.
I dont think they want the work.

Don't waste time and money on a compression test. Compression test only tells you if the compression is ok or low, but it doesn't indicate WHY the compression is good or not.

Find a mechanic to do a LEAK DOWN test. Properly done a leak down test will indicate bad rings, scratched cylinder wall, leaking valve seat (intake and exhaust). For instance, a compression test can read low if an exhaust valve is burned. But until the engine is out of the frame and the head is pulled off you won't confirm that. A leak down test on the same engine will be blowing air out the exhaust at top dead center on the compression stroke, definitely indicating a failed exhaust valve/seat.

Thing is on the VN1600, any top end work on the engine means the engine has to come out of the frame. But at least a leak down test will indicate how/what the problem is before pulling the engine from the frame. More important, it will indicate how much you'll be spending to repair the engine once its out of the frame.

Already know that something let go in there and that means the engine comes out. I’m looking at $3k at the minimum. I could probably take it in/out with help and lots of time but realistically may not seem worth it. May become a project bike for someone.

Yeah a used engine with less miles can be had for about $1500, then the cost of removing and replacing the engine, plus fluids…. That is assuming replacement engine does not need work. Might be fun project to give to my sons. Let them learn how to wrench taking out the old and in with the new. Of course it might take a few months. Have been looking for another bike but reluctant to pull the trigger.

This time of year is the best time to buy a bike.
How about a 1700 Nomad ?

Ive looked at a newer Nomad, almost bought one a cpl years ago. I found a 2016 Vaquero for a good price with about 12k miles on it. Either one would work for me.

Depends what you want I guess. A frame mounted batwing with a radio or a windshield.
Vaquero's are more money though. The 1700 Nomad's are pretty rare.

I agree on the Nomad, can find plenty of Voyagers and Vaqueros. Ive never ridden with a frame mounted faring but they look really good.
