Bevel Gear Bearing

Long story short, a couple months ago I was riding, and lost clutch pressure. Then started to hear a whine when rolling off throttle. Cap blew off the bevel gear assembly box. Finally got around to taking it apart and changing things.

When we took the assembly off, there was a bit of metal shaving in there. Not too terrible. Ran a magnet over it to get as much as possible. None of the teeth on the bevel gear looked damaged, or worn. I did notice the spacer plate that sits next to the bearing had a groove worn in it. So I replaced the plate, bearing, and assembly cap. Also throw on a new driveshaft boot since it was a little worn. Did a flush of all the oil twice until i didnt see any sparkles in the oil, and flushed the screen. When it came time to test ride, the bike still has that telltale decel whine. As soon as I squeeze the clutch, it goes away.

question is, did I miss something? Is there an adjustment that needed to be made? I saw another post somewhere that mentioned shims for the gear, but I'm not sure about any of that.

Though MAS T, I and several others have wrote about this, I don't think any of us have gone in depth about rebuilding, because its usually not something the typical rider has the equip. to service cause you need a arbor/hydraulic press, dial indicators, and some feeler gauges, shims, etc. This is something thats trial and error, sometimes taking 4 or 5 times to get the shimming right.
Sometimes you can just disassemble, keeping track of the shim location and its all good.

If you go to MaKawa, find someone thats got some experience on the 1500/1600s, take your angel drive to them, throw about $185-$200 at them, they'll do it for you....

So... I've got the tell-tale issues with the bevel gear bearing. Whining on decal, and loss of pressure on my clutch.

It's been parked for the winter since and I am considering taking on this job myself - note: I am not a mechanic.

I'm want to try and tackle this myself but I can find no tutorials or walkthroughs on this repair. I have seen a bunch of videos showing how to get at it, and some really annoying videos showing the failed bearing.

I do have access to a press, anything else I might need to watch for?

Anyone have a good walkthrough video?

I have read about replacing the bearing with "not an OEM kawi part", but no mentions if this was a good fix or not.

Any and all help is greatly appreciated.

So just use the search feature of the forum.

For some reason the links are not working properly. They are copy and pasted from the search feature.
