How difficult is it to install a trike kit? I'm sure it depends on which brand to some degree. Anyone on here ever done their own install?

Most of the kit makers like CSC, Roadsmith, etc require qualified dealers do the install. There are still some makers who allow owners to do their own install but I don't have their names.

About the Voyager Trike

I too have a trike, probably for the same reasons as you. I'm 73 years old, and have been riding since 1959. This is my retirement ride!

I own a 2009 Voyager 1700 with a Champion trike kit on it, and I can tell you this: The club I belong to has many many Kawasaki Voyagers, One guy I know is working on his second 100,000 miles on a 2011, no engine problems at all, and another member has over 200,000 miles on his Voyager. My 2009 does not have that many miles on it, But I generally only ride on long distance rides, like this year, Sacramento, CA to Hurley, WI and back,(6556 mi) then a month later, about 1500 miles on a tour of California. Year before, Sac to Estes Colorado, in 2013, a ride to Logan, Ohio and from there to the Tail Of The Dragon in NC. In 2012, Sacramento to Kanab, UT and back.
I have never felt like the bike would let me down, or break down on the road WITH THE EXCEPTION OF THAT BELT DRIVE. It has not given me any trouble, but I think about what would happen if it did break, and I'm 2 or 3 thousand miles from anyplace that could install a new one. (On the Champion trike, and probably your trike too, installing a new belt requires removing the body, and dissassembly of the left side of the drive train). For that reason only, if I had it all to do over again, I would stick with a Gold Thing and the shaft drive.

As far as engine reliability, the Kawasaki 1700 is a tractor engine in a bike frame. Like the Ever Ready Bunny, it just keeps running!

Because you have a trike, I would recommend having the ECU Re Flashed by Ivan, it makes the bike run a whole lot better. See other articles on this forum re: Ivan. You won't regret it, My most recent trip over the mountains and across the Northern US Via Montana and N. Dakota was a purely enjoyable ride! A major difference when crossing the Sierras.
Oh yeah, I always ride 2 up with my Wife as my navigator, so fully loaded with luggage etc. we are approaching 2000 pounds.
Welcome to this forum, and Kawasaki!

I have a Champion kit, dealer installed because I thought it too complicated, but since have seen several articles where owners have installed the Champion kit THEMSELVES. (I think Trike Talk, search Kawasaki/Champion there are a couple stories there) I recently visited the Champion factory in So California, and I asked this question, the guy giving us the tour didn't think it was any problem installing the kit yourself.
BTW, in my area, the dealer charges about $1500 for install, plus a fee for installing the raked front end.

Thanks Hank. Good info. I will do a search as you suggested. Post a couple of pics of your trike when you get time. Thanks.

Pics of Champion trike

During construction, you can see how difficult it would be to change drive belt.

I have a running picture show of the entire installation that the dealer made for me during construction.

Great pics. I would love to see the video. After seeing the pics, I think I would be in over my head to attempt the install myself. Great looking trike. Thanks for posting the pics.

Yeah Glenn, after spending all thet dough for the bike, then another like amount for the trike kit, I just decided I'd let the experts handle it.

As I have said before, triking a two wheeler is not going to be my next choice - These bikes were born as two wheelers, and all of the gearing, brakes, tires, and engine were not made for a trike. I would instead get a factory trike, like a CanAm, or Spider etc.

Lesson learned.

Glen, I have a CSC kit on my 2010 VV. It was installed this past Feb./Mar. CSC is one of manufacturers that requires a dealer install. If you visit http://www.triketalk.com/forum/threa...equences/page2 you'll find the photos that I posted during the install process. The photos start at post 16 and end at post 63 on page 7. They may be helpful in your quest for trike knowledge. I'll be happy to answer any questions you may have.
