I have been to Galena 3-4 years ago. It's kind of anachronistic: the old buildings and setting make you feel like you went back in time. Definitely an interesting place.

Baddad;

We're not arriving back to Galena until mid to late afternoon on Sunday; thus don't think you would make your time schedule. However... you could just cancel your Sunday plans and do something much more enjoyable!! ;)

Perfect word for Galena. The town was originally supposed to be the Illinois Capital; thus it is as old as the settlers of the Midwest are. Being a lead-mine area (the cause of its economic prosperity in the mid to late 1800's) it finally died economically in the early 1900's and basically was abandoned. No one touched much of anything for nearly fifty to sixty years -- thus most of the town and area is like walking into a time-warp of sorts.

There is only one other town I can think of that reminds me of it and that is Gerome, AZ. Both were mine-towns; both hang off the side of steep hills (mountains in Gerome's case); and both were abandoned for years before tourism stepped-in and maintained their "quaintness" -- or anachronism.

Again; for the Upper Midwest; the riding doesn't get better given all of its huge hills and twisted roads.

Regional Summer Rides I Will Be Doing

Yeah, Baddad, you would have some fun. I'd like to see your beautiful bike in person too!!

To all: I just got back from Huntsville, AL. Left Gowrie, IA about 10 am on Thusday. It was a pretty good ride down, missed most of the rain. Got to Huntsville to visit friends at Saturday noon. Had a great time but had to leave Sunday morning. Worst rain in which I ever drove a bike. Finally got to Paducah, KS that afternoon. Was blessed with a mostly dry day on Monday. Traveled around the eastern edge of the St Louis area and found IL 100, mostly following the Mississippi River north, then followed the Illinois River north, then cut over to Keokuk, IA. Stayed the night in Burlington, IA and then had a beautiful (but windy) ride the rest of the way to Gowrie, IA.

Well, I'm a whipped puppy right now, but glad I went. Throughout the entire ride, my Nomad never coughed or faltered in any way. Always started quickly and is one very, very reliable bike. Almost everytime I stopped, folks would come up and talk.

We are looking forward to the Memorial Day Ride, Greg!
Dave

jeffm: I am not sure if I went through Alton, IL but the name is familiar and I may have seen it on a sign. You live in real nice country, jeffm! I enjoyed the ride through there. BnG

Sorry to hear you guys can't make the ride. Given the weekend that it is I can understand... but you guys need to get your priorities in-line!!!! Ha! ;)

BnG; I am thinking about coming into Galena Friday night now that it is just the four of us. I'll let you know via email if I do.

Looking forward to the ride. We'll enjoy it.

Greg
