Moving from Pittsburgh to Denver

I amy be looking at moving from Pittsburgh to Denver some time during March. I do not intend to try to ride the bike at this time of year. Has anyone moved their bike long distances and if so who and how did you do it? Any helpful information is greatly appreciated. Thank you.

How are you moving the rest of your possessions? Will there be any room in the back of the truck/trailer? If so, just bolt your chock in and tie off the bike. You could rent a small trailer one way for it to tow behind your car, but I know some have had bad experiences with smaller rental trailers.
I agree, it's quite a gamble to ride to Denver in march. It might be fine....but....
Either way, connect with those of us here when you arrive and we'll ride when the weather warms up.

Welcome to Colorado. Check with your movers, they may know what to do or who to contact.

I would agree if you are able to rent a trailer and pull it to Denver... however if you can't... shipping it is another choice.

It might be expensive to do so, but the link below is to a company that specializes in shipping bikes long-distances. They have an "estimater" on the site to give you an idea.

http://www.freightcenter.com/motorcycle_shipping.aspx

I don't know the details of the purpose of your move; but if some of your moving costs are covered by a "company/corp"; they might pay for this.

Just another idea...

Riding opportunities galore. If it wasn't for the winters I'd love to live there. One of my favorite places to ride.

You'll love it! Lot and lot of gorgeous areas to ride. If you can make it, you ought to come down to cortez for the SW region rally. We'll be riding the Million Dollar Hwy which is one of the best road in the nation.

Moving from Pittsburgh to Denver

My brother just moved from Denver to Utah. He loved it but says there is just as much and probably more, closer, good rides in Southern Utah. I lived in Denver back in the 70's and loved it. I visit there a few times a year and love going. Two of my sisters live there. A good reason to ride. A great city with so much to do. Only problem is, too many crazy driving cagers.

We tied his bike, an HD, into the back of his pickem-up truck with the tailgate down each time he moved. Never had a problem either way.

Eagleman,

Welcome to Colorado. Will be looking forward to seeing you around some.
Winters in and around Denver (north, south, or east) usually aren't so bad that you can't get a ride in now and then, even this year I've managed several. Rest of the year is fantastic, once you get away from the high-density areas, which aren't any worse than those elsewhere, in my experience.

Moving from Pittsburgh to Denver

You guys are making the decision to come even better. I just have to now figure out the best way to get my bike out there and where I am going to be living. Need at least a one car garage and would love to have a two car but one car for the bike would be great. May have to shoulder the expense of the move from Pittsburgh myself as the Company is taking a no-relo package stand. I have a great job once I get there - it is just a matter of getting a place to rent with a garage that is not too expensive. It is just me coming with no pets - would like to have a 2 bedroom if possible. Any ideas of a good location? Will be working at 1745 Stout Street in Denver. Any leads on a good moving company?

Eagleman,

I live in eastern Colorado. Not exactly the best roads (straight) in Colorado. However, within 2 hours I can be in the mountains. Up close to Ells is some very nice roads.

Good luck on the move and the new job. We looked at Denver too, but just couldn't make the move away from my grandsons. I'm real jealous on your riding opportunities, sure beats the mid-west!

Guess it all depends on how you're moving - your own moving truck or professional movers. When Ann and I relocated to Texas from WA, we put her VN900 in the moving truck, strapped down the bars and the back end, then covered the top with pillows, old blankets and a mattress. 2500 miles later and it arrived without a scratch. That's the Do It Yourself version. I don't trust moving companies whatsoever. Nobody cares as much about your property as you do.

You'll love Colorado in the spring, summer and fall. I grew up in Canon City, about 100 miles southwest of Denver, and loved the mountains and epic scenery out there. So much good riding, it's hard to pick a favorite.
