I've seen similar before, and was amazed. I decided that predictability is the big factor, and even unpredictability is predictable if you are expecting it to be that way. Sounds like an oxymoron, but thing about it.

We get in trouble when we have the right of way, and expect the left turner to yield the right of way. If there was no law saying left turns yield, we wouldn't be expecting them to.

I think it works because people expect it to be random, and by expecting it they plan accordingly.

I suppose if you never saw a crowd of people walking, I mean never never saw such a thing, you'd be amazed that a sports stadium could empty. It would look like total chaos.

Setting up expectations for orderly behaviour throws everything into chaos when it doesn't go right. Where their is no expectation for it, things don't get thrown out of whack so easily.

In Tonga traffic doesn't move with the expectations we have here. You kind of push your way through. At first it was hard, then I got the hang of it and it was no problem at all.

There are many parallels that could be drawn. For example Bernie Madoff. He couldn't have ripped everyone off so easy if there wasn't an expectation that regulators are watching for people like him, and they stop them. The expectation that regulations are making you safe made it work. If people thought that there was no watchdog regulators, and it was just a free-f0r-all, they would have been more cautious.

I think we could all do that riding comfortably once we got used to the new expectations; though I'd rather do it our way here.

This video is sped-up a bit. You can tell when the guy walks across the street. None-the-less, it's more than I care to try. Muscling the Nomad around the downtown streets of Chicago a few weeks back was enough for me.

when I first moved to Germany I thought the same thing that this is crazy the way they drive but itis actually very orderly......yield right of way....you always yield to traffic coming from your right. I driven through numerous rotaries and once I got in the "mind set" it was easy.

I drive in and around New York City, and it isn't quite as bad as this, though at times it might seem like it. It looks like they "see" the cyclist's, unlike here, where you have to do everything to make sure the cagers "see" you. In this situation, you have to drive "offensively" (not mean) but with purpose. You have to take control and impose your right of way. It ain't easy but it works.
