Madcow,

Use the plug behind the kickstand. It is a large flanged plug. I think it is 17mm. There will be a spring, screen and a neoprene washer behind the plug. Don't lose or damage the items, they are a little fragile. Take a look at Gadget's Fixit page:
http://www.gadgetjq.com/vulcan_1500_oil-sys.htm
Copy and paste the address in the browser or click the link. This should help.

You will probably find that the screen has trapped some debris, especially if you have never used this drain before. Make sure you put things back in the correct order, and that the screen is seated properly in the engine.

Madcow,
Can't be a dumb question if you don't know the answer. The spring will pop the plug out, so exercise caution upon removal. The schematic on Gadget's page is a good reference.

That bolt/plug is made of very fragile alloy, made to shear the threads off if it gets over tightened. This still leaves engine side threads intact sort of.. Don't get the plug over tight. Pretty much when it stops you stop and just add a slight tighter than, mostly light pressure which doesn't really move that plug at all.

No such thing as a dumb question, only dumb answers (usually from someone like me )

doc i actually have to use my honda dealer ( they are great) as the kawa dealer is only interested if you are buying a boat or trail bike. they wouldnt even source me a new nomad brochure.

as a famous movie once said .... theres no such thing as a stupid question, just stupid people......

Madcow; I noticed that you say your Nomad is a 98 model, I think you must have one of the very first Nomads produced, since they were not available until 99 in North America. But did produce a few 98 models elsewhere for sale. Nice looking bike!

Actualy the 99 nomads were available in 98. Kawasaki released them early. I bought my 99 nomad in april of 98. I bought one of the first ones in the state. The vin plate said it was a 99, and it was titled as a 99.
