I know some of you guys have brutal winters. It's been especially bad in the Northcentral and Northeast this year. I had to laugh a few times Joel when it was 20 down here and over 40 in CO. This past Friday night we had over 250 weather related crashes in LA highways. A couple were fatal. Sections of I-10, I-20, and I-49 were closed until mid day Saturday. Every overpass and bridge were covered with black ice. The last time we saw snow here was in 2004.

Yep Mitch, we do live in an area where we do get extremes but they generally don't last compared to just east of us. We have seen -15 this winter and below 0 many times. However, with the mountains just west of us, fronts generally move out fast and if we get a good west wind (downslope) we can warm fast. Yesterday close to 60 and tomorrow close to 20 for highs.

As for those areas that only see freezing precipitation once every few years, the idiots who don't think of slick roads make driving not fun for anyone. At least you only have to deal with that once in a while.

Well, the next front has moved in. Blowing pretty hard (if you call 30+ hard) and the temperatures have dropped 30 degrees from this afternoon.

The front hasn't quite hit us yet (due sometime tonight). It got up to 40* today and it's still 38*. However.......tonight will be a low of -1 (which also happens to be tomorrows high) with wind gusts to 50 mph. Tomorrow night will be the cold one with lows close to -20*F. Low single digits on Tuesday then teens Wednesday and more "normal" 20s after that. Whew! Looks like the next 36 hours will make or break everyone around here.

Hope you're staying warm and safe!

Starts for us tomorrow afternoon. Winter storm warning beginning Tuesday and extending through Wednesday. Sleet, freezing rain, and 3"+ of snow possible. I suppose I can retire further North when the time comes.

For everyone who is complaining about the cold. Here is a list of the top 20 cities that can complain.

I grew up north of #5 and 7 and now live east of #16 and 18. I'm moving in the right direction.

I live in between 6, 10 and 15. It got up to a whopping 1*F today. Around here, we just need to get through the next 24 hours and we should be out of it (at least for the next week). We didn't get any appreciable snow this time.

I used to live NW of #6. Las Vegas could only make it to 65 today but 70 is forecast for tomorrow.

Now I know you guys are still digging out of monstrous drifts of snow but here in the Deep South, we are going to get 3 whole inches today. Folks are grabbing eggs, milk and bread like it is a zombie apocalypse leading me to think that French toast is useful as a traction aid. There will be stories told in Georgia for years about the snow of 2014.

Not sure why people buy milk and eggs during a storm. Mostly if you lose your power you would be better off with peanut butter and jam (jelly sucks), cold cuts are okay to eat up to room temp. Good luck with the deep freeze.

People do that in northern Indiana when a few inches are forecast and that's normal winter weather here. I get groceries every 2 week (no more and no less) regardless of the weather (or lack of it). I have a freezer full of food so I'm good, even if I'm stuck at home for a while. If the power goes out, I'll put everything in a box in the (unheated) garage. I'll drag out the grille and cook up my frozen pizza.

We can get 3" dumped here in an hour. When a foot of snow is in the parking lots you still can barely get into Costco, or the mall most times. When we get more than that then people stay in for the day.

3.5 inches way down south in Dixie. We can't get our squad apparatus out so we are running EMS calls with our Gator and my golf cart. Hauling patients up to the major highway a couple of miles away. Abandoned and wrecked cars everywhere. What a mess.
