Finger Lakes Trivia

Who is ready for some interesting facts on the Finger Lakes? As a local resident I thought I would throw some fuel onto the fire to persuade Northeast region members to make the drive for the 2009 rally. As beezer said, "We're all here for enjoyment." This will be a hit or miss installment, not a regularly scheduled program. If there are others with interested trivia or knowledge of the Fingers Lakes feel free to throw it up here.

I chose the first Trivia question for you motorcycle historians out there.

Who was the world speed record holder on a motorcycle and also dubbed the "fastest man in the world"?

Hint: It was 1907 and he grew up in the Finger Lakes.

Unfortunately I will be away from the computer until Monday. So I will divulge the answer far too quickly for those who don't know.

In 1907 a bicycle guy named Glenn H. Curtis lived in Hammondsport, NY. He was an original guy who invented lots of things and was an aircraft pioneer in his day. He developed a V8 air cooled airplane engine in 1906/1907- yeah a V8 in 1907. To help show off this big motor he returned to his knowledge base of bicycles thus building a chassis around this motor. The rest as the say- is history. Curtis was also an aviation pioneer work on flying boats/sea planes and military fighter planes. Check out these links. If you would like to see a reproduction of his motorcycle or any of the airplane work he did just stop into the Glenn Curtis museum in Hammondsport, NY ( South end of Keuka Lake).

The wife and I were up last year in October with the van,and we both said it would be nice to go up on the bike next October.
