Drilled thermostat

Is it possible to drill a hole in the thermostat flange similar to what you would do on old hot rods to allow the water to flow before it actually opened ?

As I recall..When i did my cooling system service the water was flowing a little bit all the time the engine was running..so there must already be a passage to circulate some of the coolent even befor the thermostat gets warm enough to open ! ?
