Mt Rainer

Looking for road info on State Hwy 706 out of Elbe, Wa and 123 to 140. The road runs from Elbe to Longmire up to Crystal Mtn. When does it open? Is it a paved route all the way? Any other info, such as eats and fuel, on that area would be helpful. This is a tentative route but we're scheduling a June 21 -1 July tour

Do you mean 410?

Check out the Mount Rainier web site for info on when roads open. It all depends on snowfall. Good food in Elbe, nice little burger joint or you can eat in the train. Full up there and you will have plenty to get to the next fuel past Crystal. The road will take you through the park so be prepared to pay.

The roads around Mt. Rainier are all paved and very beautiful. There might still be a lot of snow up there near the end of June, but you can check the status of the roads you mentioned (706, 123, 410) at the link below. We usually ride these roads in late July or August, as by then things are well melted off. The earlier in the day the better, as traffic can get tough going up to Paradise in the summer. Also, I think last year a portion of the roadway from Paradise eastbound on Stevens Canyon Road to 123 was closed due to washouts. Be sure you check the road status below before heading out.

One last thing...if you ride up here...DO NOT miss Mt. St. Helens. There are two ways in and out...one from the west off I-5...and the road less traveled from the east to Windy Ridge. Both are spectacular and not to be missed on your bike ride....truly awe inspiring!

Thanks, Kris. I was wondering whether late June could be a bit early. The link is appreciated and bookmarked. The other roads we're thinking about are 25 and 30 between Randle and Carson, any info?

Those roads are paved and fun to ride, but take time as they are two-lane twisties in the woods. They are also very lumpy in places, so take it easy. Use the street view in Google Maps to check them out. Let me know if you don't know how and I'll do a step-by-step for you. It's one of the coolest/best tools I've ever seen for checking stuff out....
