Tom, Easy-off oven cleaner works great for getting baked on stuff off of pipes. I've used it a couple of times, and it works really well. It doesn't damage the chrome at all, that was my concern the first time I used it.

Use Easy-Off on cold pipes, not hot. Spray it on, let it sit overnight and then rinse with water and wipe the goop off the next day. Watch the over spray, you don't want it on anything other than the pipe.

Get a patch made out of an old ironing board cover and glue it to the spot on the leg that touches the pipes.

#0000 Steel Wool (you can get it at Lowes or Home Depot, etc.), WD40 and some elbow grease works like a champ every time.

I have never used Easy Off but have used the steel wool that Netnorske described on other bikes. It does work.
