Gas gauge problem

There appears to be a problem with the amount of fuel my gauge is reading. The last 2 times I filled the tank, my gauge showed 2 bars, but my warning light was on and that light was right. The first time it needed 4.7 gallons and this time it needed 4.4.

I have an '05 and this the first time i've had this problem. What could be causing this and what can I do to fix it? Would hate to be out on a ride and get a major surprise.

SWB, Everytime you get gas reset your trip meter. That way you know how far you have been and how far you have left to go.
I think those little bars are useless anyway.

Reset the trip meter at each fill up. I've never looked at those bars. Only the light, but then I've run out of gas 1/2 a dozen times too......

This is kind of strange. I thought the float that operates in the tank runs the low fuel light and the "bars" off the same feed. I'll have to check.

Valdez, somehow that picture just isn't working for me..

SWB do you have a manual? Page 580 shows how to check the fuel level meter's resistance value.

I don't have a manual yet. Weren't you going to send it to me?

I also thought what you did about the gauge and light.

Gas gauge problem

Right away I'm thinking that since the gage is actuated by a change in resistance, and it's reading wrong, then there's some extra resistance in the form of corroded terminals. I'd try unplugging & cleaning the terminals, including the ones on the ECU plugs.

Since his is still technically working I'd think there was just "crap" on the terminals somewhere down the line.

Gas gauge problem

Of all the things that can be done with electronics, those bars are losers when they are working. I do tend to note the miles when one of the blinks out but the last one is worthless, never goes out and gives no useful information when you need it the most. Give me the trip meter (All hail to Trip!)
and reserve any day.
