stereo questions

I just recently bought a fairing for my Nomad and am getting ready to start buying a stereo to install in it. I was just curiose if its recommended to use marine equipment or if i can stick with car audio? I havnt got the fairing mounted yet as im taking the bike apart tomorrow for repainting so i have a fair bit of time to listen to advise. As our riding season is fairly short here I live on my bike come season and do ride in all sorts of weather so I want to make sure i dont have issues. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanx

I ride alot in wet weather also....

Yeah marine would be the preference also i used clear silicone some use sticky foam like you use around old trailer doors get a good seal around your windshield . Water running down the windshield is headed straight for the radio. I also bought one of these . http://www.ebay.com/itm/BKMCK2000B-W...item20f230c90a
and i also have this internal antenna works great. http://www.ebay.com/itm/TT2C2-TUNE-T...206081&vxp=mtr
i installed it like so see pic then i got a semi hard piece of plastic sheet and hot glued it from the back of the marine mount on top to the top of the antenna it was as wide as the radio and folded down the sides to protect it from rain . I left about 2 inches all the way around so it could breath . I have got caught in some gully washers and so far so good.

If you use the waterproof cover and seal the windshield to the fairing, Marine isn't a must.

Thanx alot Teachme, you answered the my other question about whether or not an internal antenna would eork. I have no experience with a fairing or music on my bike for that matter, everyone else i ride with is strictly windshield and i always just sing to myself lol. Really getting excited to get her completely stripped down and painted so I can go for a ride.

I didn't use marine components on mine, but we don't get a whole lot of rain here in the desert.

I've had a regular car head unit (JVC) on my bike for a little over 8 years now, and I do use one of those marine splash covers over the front of it. My fairing (Premeux) has a din for the stereo to fit into, so I don't have to worry about keeping it dry. Ive ridden in some bad rain storms and never had a problem. Some of the features I really like about my head unit are it has a remote control (IR) and a USB plug right on the front. I load my music on a thumb drive, stick it in the stereo, close the cover, and ride. The remote works thru the cover, so I don't ever have to open the cover, and you can read the stereo thru the cover.
All that being said, If I could find a marine unit with the features I want, I would buy it, but I haven't seen a marine unit yet that I like.

Yeah my latest radio isnt marine that why i said the perfered is marine like MT said i spent more time making sure the seal between windshield is good. Even marine will crap out if it gets wet enough.

That's not true. My marine radio gets wet when I wash the bike or it gets in rain. Don't have issues with it and have had the same stereo on my last 2 bikes.

I use this stereo

If I had to do it over I would go with this one as there's an amp hookup.

Your response brings up a good question ....

i assumed he was installing a car stereo. Here is the one i had on the bike when i bought it http://www.crutchfield.com/S-Q9tNrag...y-CDX-M10.html it was marine and i can testify for sure that during a hard rain it would bug out. Now your unit on the other hand may be better sealed seeing as how there is no cd slot. I still think protection during mounting is the key factor. Guess i should have been more specific and said " My Marine Radio " went out when it got really wet.

I really appreciate all the advice and ideas, Im still unsure yet if im going with just a head unit or if Im going with a cd deck. Im hoping to find just a head unit with a usb and good fm that will fit in the din my fairing has, dont really listen to cds at all even in my cages.

That's what I got, a head from Walmart with USB ands sdcard slot. I have marine speakers and cover for the head. Been riding like that for awhile but I just hooked up an amp today and it sounds great.
