crazy Dealing with Dealers

A lot of members are trading up to another ride and I'm no different. I've been eyeing a bike that cost some decent coin.

I've internet shopped for the last few months and have sent in the "request a quote" forms with only my email addy as a contact. I sure don't have time to discuss finances with the Joe Average salesman over the phone.

Thought I let you know what's happened. I've contacted a dealer in Arizona that would write up the bike and gave me a out the door price. I considered it good as it was almost 5K under list and was OTD for less that the list price.

So far so good right? I had the other dealers contact me and ask me what the best offer I had so far (I was really feeling like I was in control) after showing them the OTD price (none of them knew I was dealing behind the scenes with more that 1 or 2 dealers) I requested them to match or beat that price.

Anyways, these other dealers came back with a price averaging 3.5K more than the quote. There was my quote next to their quote 3.5K more!

Then the unthinkable happened! All the other dealers asked me to come in and close the deal???

I thanked them for trying and bid them well. All day long today I got emails from the other dealers wondering why I hadn't shown up for the bike!? I got statements like, "what do we need to do".

I told them to go back to school and learn to recognize when one number is the larger of the other number!

Not sure yet as I still feel like fishing for a better deal. I might not get it but I love the unbelievable stupidity of salesmen!

Number one rule of selling: Never take no for an answer.
Number two rule: Objections are just requests for information.

At the largest Honda dealership in Utah that I worked at, about 80% of the employees had an IQ that could rival a monkey.

Are they comparing apples with apples here, or perhaps they are not the exact same model?

He's still looking at a new Burgman. He was very impressed with the one at Kanab.

When I bought my ST 1300 I had a salesman tell me a price that was $5000 below list price. I agreed to buy it and he said he needed to get paperwork and would be right back. Came back with it at list price and said the other was just a guess. Manager didn't care. Don't know how they thought that tactic would entice me to buy at their dealership, which of course I didn't.

You should pay the highest price to help the economy! Besides whatever you keep will just be taxed... Then the government will have it to do what they want with it... like invest in more solar companies on the brink of crashing.

Seriously, you know something isn't right when there is that much difference. Have the low priced dealer send you a written confirmation of the deal. My guess is, you don't get it from them. I smell fish...

Brad,

If you buy a vehicle out of state, doesn't CA law require that it have at least 7,500 miles on it before you can register it in CA? I thought I read that somewhere.

Keep in mind that dealerships in CA have to charge you sales tax, registration, etc. as part of the out the door cost. A dealership outside of CA doesn't. A $22K bike at 8.25% (Lakewood sales tax) is going to cost you close to $2K in just sales tax. If you purchase the bike elsewhere, you'll have to pay that in one large sum when you got it home and you couldn't role it into a loan.
