I was working in metric and imperial depending on where the machinery I was building was going. Metric is much easier in my opinion.

Having been raised with the imperial system and then forced changed to metric, I would also agree that metric is much easier yet old habits die hard.

The UK went metric in 1970,just as i was leaving school. And despite working in metres & millimeters all my life,i still think in feet & inches. The currency i picked up on overnight.

This new camchain has 10in+ side slack, from the centre. That dont seem right for a premium chain. What do you blokes think ?

Seems like a lot to me. I don't think a larger size chain would have that much side play.
Can you compare it to your old chain or do you not have the engine apart yet ? |

I have'nt got the old chains off yet mate.I got the engine out,on the deck, and cleaned up.What a bastard of a job that was on my own.The strange thing is,the old chain is tight with the extenders on.But i do have marks on the plug tubes,so new chains it will get. These new chains, are supposed to be the best, and cost twice what Kawasaki want. But with that much slack on them,i have to wonder.Looking forward to winding the crank with a socket, while feeding the chain through, and finding the timing mark on the crank. Then joining the chain with the other 2 spare hands.

Hey Mick! OK, regular chain has a 'X' amount of side slack....too much its outta spec., needs changing....since we're really not worried about cam walk, as in a automotive app....I would not really loose any sleep over it....
I've changed many a CB750, Kz900-1000, GS1000-1100 timing chain with new ones that had what you got there.... Because the total length, and the cam and crank sprockets more or less fixed, and a slack adjuster, side flex shouldn't be a issue. Whether this is correct, I don't know....but they don't really say in the manuals. On timing chains, we're more worried about slack in the chain, Pin to sidebar elongation, and roller stress cracks..... These chains are held tight by tensioners, have a clean oil bath for lubrication, and a held straight by shoes or chain guides.... The measurement that checks the chains is over several links, you should have a 'X' amount roller to roller 'length'....checked by mic'ing or using dial/digital calipers.... Just my 2 pecos..... https://www.testingautos.com/car_car...-replaced.html

For those that have never fitted a new cam chain. It is not easy. The fiddling about, trying to line up the 3 parts, while holding them in place to be riveted. Is a job i would farm out,if given the option. It is a close run thing between that, and tugging the motor apart, and fitting genuine parts.
