They had already closed the road before this happened, so there was no traffic on the road. Atleast they knew to get people off the road.

Dang it I was thinking of riding over to Cherokee while Deborah and I were visiting up here in Gatlinburg this weekend.. guess that's out!

You can still get there but it's a 110 mile detour. Pretty ride though.

Deborah & I got up early this morning to go through Cades Cove and had to take 50 mile detour and after we got there they never opened up the Loop. We'll just wait til spring for our Cherokee trip...

Newfound Gap Road Landslide Closure
• Newfound Gap Road (US-441) between Gatlinburg, TN and Cherokee, NC is closed to through traffic due to a landslide near mile marker 22 on the North Carolina side of the park. Access to Newfound Gap from the Gatlinburg Entrance is currently open to all vehicles. Watch for ice and snow on the roadway. Access to Collins Creek is permitted from the Cherokee entrance in North Carolina. The road is expected to reopen to through traffic in mid-May.
