I would second the leaking exhaust theory. I had terrible backfiring with my 2008 Nomad, and found that the screws that hold the back pipe onto the engine had come loose. Tightened them up, and backfiring was gone.

If the backfiring is on decel then you need to add more fuel on the midrange portion of your tuner.

You need to "Marble" it, it's the smog junk. I had the same problem and this Gadget fix solved completely!

If it's the emissions stuff, just take it off get a set of coasters and be done with it. Easy fix.

I had an 06. You are getting all the right answers, imho. You will have to work through them to figure it out.

1) I would check exhaust gaskets first since the exhaust was replaced. Fire it up cold and spray some Windex around the connections. You will see it real fast if it's leaking. And since you say it is backfiring a lot I think this is going to be it.

As mentioned add some to the mid-range of the tuner.

Marble it per the link above. Quick easy fix if it is the constant pop corn back fire you are talking about.

What they said about marbleing the emissions. Theres a hose at the back of your OEM intake plate (right side) that directs air into the exhaust ports to ensure any unburned fuel is ignited. This causes a popping in the exhaust. The factory exhaust system is designed to muffle it but your aftermarket exhaust doesn't so you hear backfiring on deceleration. This is a common problem with these bikes. Marbleing just consists of detaching the hose and plugging it with something. A glass marble happens to be a perfect fit.
...but loose exhaust header bolts or bad exhaust gaskets will cause it too.
