1600 wheelbase versus 1500

Specs for the VN1600 show the wheelbase about 2.9" longer than for the VN1500. I've read reports that say the 1500 feels much more nimble. The frame is basically the same, the 1600 swingarm is 1.2" longer, so the rest of the difference must be the triple clamp/headset offset. I've looked at triple clamps sets on Ebay and there is a definite difference in the triple clamp sets depending on the model and engine size. The triple clamp for most 1500 models has less offset than the 1600. However the 1500 and 1600 Mean Streak models appear to have the most triple clamp offset, and the Mean Streak models have the longest wheelbase.

By triple clamps offset I mean the center distance from the stem to the centerlines on the fork tubes. A set of 1500 triple clamps on the 1600 frame would shorten the wheelbase about 1.0". I just bought a triple clamp/steering stem set on ebay from a VN1500 (tag in the part says VN1500-L) and the center stem hole is definitely 1" or more closer to the centerline of the fork legs than on my 1600 Classic. So when I update the front forks on my 1600 I'll use the 1500 triple clamp set to shorten the wheelbase slightly, by moving the fork legs back at least 1.0". A minor change certainly, but a shorter wheelbase reduces the amount of lean angle required to make a turn. When I combine that with raising the suspension slightly (I exchanged the shorter Progressive shocks for the stock length air-assist shocks), and raising the floor boards 1.5" I plan to get reduced "grindage" when cornering. I'm not looking to achieve the lean angles possible that I'm comfortable with on my BMW R1200RT, just more reasonable lean angles on my 1600. The way the bike was set up when I 1st got it had me grinding hard on easy roundabout turns in the area.
