Gas coming out of key slot in gas cap

I tried to look it up on the search, but kept getting errors. I have a 02 1500 Nomad FI. I filled up yesterday and while riding I noticed gas coming out to the key slot in the gas cap. I know that with the FI, the fuel system becomes a pressurized and the vent for the tank is the key slot. Did I over fill the tank or is the valve in the gas cap malfunctioning. This is my first FI bike and this threw me off a bit.

be sure your not over filling it ! on my 1600 fi your only supposed to fill it to the bottom of the "neck" on gas tank. did it continue after you had run some gas out of it ? even so, i dont think it should come out of the cap, it should go to overflow hose. im sure someone else will chime in on this ! stay tuned ! lol

Gas coming out of key slot in gas cap

I have an 02 as well and I usually fill mine to the brim, I may have a bit of leakage around the gas cap or drip from the overflow hose sometimes. I don't ever recall having it leak through the keyhole. Perhaps the vent is clogged or the hose is pinched. Nomads usually whistle in the warm weather through the gascap vent. You may have to take yours apart and have a look to see that it is working. Gadgets Fixit sight has an article on gascaps.

First, welcome to the land of the good for nothing search feature. ;)

It was stated here before the proper way to fill the tank is on the side stand and fill to botom of tank insert thingy. or neck as lonewolf called it.

Remember too that when you fill with the bike on the sidestand it will be lower than when the bike is level. Don't ask me how I know. When filled with the bike on the sidestand if you fill it above the metal thing in the bottom of the filler neck and the when the bike is brought up level it may come up too high. This could cause it to leak from a couple different places.

The ONLY way that I can imagine a leak through the key slot is if a vent is clogged.

And that it wouldn't leak from around the cap itself says that your O-ring must be on steroids.

Make sure the gas tank over flow tube near the oil filter isn't gagged up with road debris. Or someone didn't plug it/cap it off. make sure it isn't pinched too. It exits the tank at right rear seated.

The only time gas ever came out my key hole was in a crash with a 1500. The bike was wheels high, and I had just filled up 4 miles back.

I filled the bike leaned on the kickstand and filled it to the bottom of the filler, probably overfilled. It continued to leak until my fuel gauge showed 3/4 of a tank. I'm going to check the overflow and make sure its not clogged, pinched or blocked in any ways. Appreciate the help.

That is the correct method and fill procedure so something is wrong. You can pop the cap open, and pull up the over flow tube and blow back thru it, clean the tube as you see fit.
